‘They love you so much.’
Loved, in Ray’s case.
I ran my hand over his face.
His gaze settled on me, who in turn was studying him closely. He looked a right mess, all cried-out, eyes red and sore. He’d seen me like that so often—crying wasn’t something foreign to me, I did it all the time—but I could count on one hand how many times I’d seen him like this.
He cupped my cheek fondly.
‘I love you. I try to tell you often, but I don’t think I’m very good at it.’
I smiled widely.
‘I love you too.’ My fingers wrapped loosely around his wrist. ‘And you are. Good at it, I mean. You’re amazing.’
No one else would be able to keep up with me and my mood swings. His patience… it was legendary.
‘Are you ready to go? If you’re not, we can stay a little longer.’ Now that the kitchen table was gone, it was easier for me to be in the house too. The veranda door was still there, obviously, but… it was the kitchen table he’d used to try and kill me. It was that that left me in a total panic.
It was gone now. Thrown away. Definitely not put into storage.
He looked around again, sniffling a little. Then he nodded, lips thinning into a line for a brief second.
‘Yeah.’ He entwined his fingers with min. ‘I’m ready.’
