In The Cards Page 10

by Cynthia Selwyn

Alex couldn’t believe she’d been so blind to the truth, and to her own needs. She’d been nothing more than Tim’s convenience, and his whore. But not anymore. Her hero was here, to rescue her.

Alex turned to the man she’d once thought she’d marry. “Tim, I loved you. But you broke my heart. Living with you was like living in a gilded cage.” She gave Zach a wink. “I felt…soiled. I could never marry you and be happy. Zach’s right.” She shook her head. “I’m sorry. Please leave.”

Zach stood, lifted her into a bear hug, and buried his face in her neck; his breath brushed her skin like a caress. “I love you, Alex Taylor.”

“I can’t believe this. I drove all the way down here… I’m the one with the ring. What’s he got? Nothing! You’re only accepting his offer because he’s better-looking than I am!” Tim shouted.

Alex leaned back in Zach’s arms and gazed into his eyes; she realized suddenly that the love she saw shining in them had always been there. She just hadn’t been paying attention. “No, Tim. I’m accepting his offer because I can see into his heart—and it’s like looking at a piece of my soul.”

“Oh, this is stupid. You know what? I don’t need you. I’ve got Tiffany! She’ll take this ring. She picked it out, anyway.” With that, Tim turned and stomped out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

“He is such an asshole,” Zach muttered.

Alex couldn’t stop the giggle that bubbled out of her. She didn’t want to. She’d never felt so happy. “Did that card really say that?”

“Why? Did you want it to say something else?” He loosened his grip and she slid all the way down his warm, hard body in a sensuous rub that made her nipples harden and her pussy swell.

“As a matter of fact…” she grinned and slid down over his legs until she knelt on the floor in front of him. She reached for his belt buckle. “I want it to say, ‘treat your best friend’s p-e-n-i-s like a lollipop.’”

Zach tangled his fingers in her hair as she undid his jeans and pushed them down to his ankles. Beneath his black silk briefs, his dick lengthened until the head rose over the waistband, pressing against his stomach. She slid the tip of her tongue over it, cupping his silk-clad balls in her palm. Zach groaned, bent, and pulled her to her feet.

“I need you,” he said. “I need to be inside you.”

She let him push her back onto the bed; with deft hands, he stripped off her clothes until she was bare to his gaze. Without waiting, he loomed over her and slid his stiff cock into her pussy. She sighed with pleasure as he filled her.

He paused, an almost frightened look in his sky-blue eyes. “You didn’t want to marry Tim, did you?”

Alex grinned as she realized what his fright meant. She couldn’t help but tease him, though. “You’re inside me and you’re asking this?”

He shrugged above her. She loved that he could have any woman in the world, yet it was her he wanted—and that he was afraid she wouldn’t want him. She reached up and twined her fingers in his hair, pushing his face close to hers. Alex reached up to kiss him on the cheek.

“I realized, if I married Tim, I’d never be able to make love to you again…and I couldn’t bear that. I need you, Zachary Michael O’Connor. In my life. As my best friend—and my lover. I love you.”

He grinned, then. She was amazed to feel him grow inside her body, swelling before he began the slow, sensuous thrusts that matched him, word for word. “I love you, too. I think…it’s…in…the…cards.” He gave a final, deep plunging push and Alex crested into another sparkling white orgasm. She cried out with a husky moan; Zach joined her with a hoarse shout. He trembled and then collapsed on top of her. “Miz Scarlett,” he panted, “I think I owe you extra.”

“That’s okay, Rhett,” she answered. “This one’s on the house. Our house. The one we’ll buy with the money I make on the book we’ll write together.”

He kissed her throat and rolled onto his back, pulling her with him. “And we’ll live happily ever after.”

She rested her chin on his chest and stroked his cheek with her fingers. “Of course. I’m a romance writer, after all. And you are my hero.”

He took her hand in his and kissed her fingertips. “The end.”

  Biography

A trapped-at-home mom of three, freelance fiction editor and romance writer, Cynthia Selwyn has been married to the same man for seventeen years. If there’s anything she knows about relationships, it’s that humor can keep the love alive (or at least on life-support).

Cynthia started writing at the age of six and has been writing since then. After many rejections, she finally earned a contract with The Wild Rose Press with Kissing Trick, (written as C.D. Yates) and is now writing exclusively for Breathless Press, where she hopes to earn enough money in royalties to support her coffee habit. Her goal with each book is to bring a smile to her readers’ faces and love to their hearts, by writing a sexy story with a touch of magic.
