Terms of Engagement Page 19

by Kylie Brant

  “Very sacrificing of you.”

His arms tightened around her and he bent his head to nip at her neck. “You oughta know from our first meeting that’s the kind of guy I am. Nothing but give, give, give.”

He laved the slight sting on her neck with his tongue. His closeness seemed to wipe her mind clean, and she was finding it difficult to think. And needed to, quite desperately.

“We’ve…Five days…” The rest of her statement was lost for the moment when his lips moved to her jaw and made a whisper-soft string of kisses to her ear.

“That we’ve known each other, I mean.” She shuddered, when he took her earlobe between his teeth, worried it gently. “We’ve only known each other five days.”

“Time’s an interesting concept. A few instants can seem like a lifetime. Like when I went upstairs and saw Rassi with a gun to your head.” A note of hardness entered his voice. “A lot can become clear in a moment like that.”

It could, she knew. She tipped her head back, considered him. Because some things had crystallized for her when she’d fumbled to load that gun. Praying she had the guts to use it. Afraid that she wouldn’t.

“I figure a woman on the run for three years isn’t one to waste any more time than she has to. That’s why I’m telling you now that I love you.”

Her heart gave one dizzying spin in her chest. His expression had gone sober. His gaze searching. “I think you love me, too, but if you’re the type to want a man to grovel a bit, I suppose I can wait to hear you say it.”

“I do love you.” She stopped, tried to find the words to explain her hesitation.

  “But…” he prompted.

“I spent the last three years trying to play it safe. To curb that wild streak that has caused me nothing but trouble.” She shook her head in bemusement as she studied him. “There is nothing remotely tame about you.”

“We’ll tame each other,” he vowed. He lowered his mouth to hers, hovered a fraction of an inch above it. “And from now on, when we take a walk on the wild side, it’ll be together.”
