  Little thrills of happiness ran through his body and he began kicking his heels against the ground. He was so happy he wanted to sing out loud. He would have liked to stay outside for a while longer, sitting alone in the darkness, but there, in the kitchen window, he saw the blind move for the second time, which meant that inside they were getting worried about him. It was late, after all, and he hadn’t even started his homework.

  Suddenly there was a scraping sound and the back door opened.

  “Charles?” It was Lucie’s voice, sing-song but with a hint of worry. “What are you doing out there? Talking to the moon?”

  Before he could reply there was a flurry of feet crossing the yard and Boff was on him like a locomotive, his tongue quick and slobbery, his paws pummelling Charles’s shoulder.
