Nearly.
I manage to hold myself back, pushing inch by inch until I’m completely inside her. Then I stop, forcing air into my lungs as I savor the sensation of being inside the woman I love.
It’s incredible.
Absolutely. Fucking. Incredible.
Damn, I love her.
I brush soft tendrils of hair from her forehead so I can plant a kiss on it, then stroke her cheek as I let myself drown in her misty eyes.
“I love you,” I repeat the words I told her earlier, meaning them as much now as I did then, as I will each time I say them for the rest of my life.
She places her hand on my cheek as well, smiling. “You are the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” Then she pecks my cheek before whispering in my ear. “Now, get on with it.”
I chuckle. “Yes, ma’am.”
I jerk my hips, moving slowly at first, then faster as the passion builds up inside me.
Beneath me, she loses herself in our lovemaking, moaning and thrashing, hands gripping the sheets, her hair spread out in a beautiful mess around her head, like a halo.
Beautiful.
Just looking at her head thrown back, eyes half-lidded and heavy with passion, lips parted just so....and my chest threatens to burst but something else does first.
With one final thrust, I bury myself deep inside her seconds before my cock explodes, my entire body shaking with the intensity of it. Clarissa wraps her arms around me, squeezing me as she milks me of every drop, nails digging into my skin as her body quakes just as hard as mine, her head thrown back as she lets out a scream of pleasure that seems to go on forever.
Then she falls back on the bed and I fall on top of her, our bodies slick with sweat. Her fingers stroke my hair as her heart pounds beneath mine while I lie still, spent.
When I’ve caught some of my breath, I move off her, lying beside her and pulling her into my arms. I bury my face in her hair that smells like berries, a sea of that magic red-gold-brown that is her, under the sun that has begun to set.
She turns to face me. “We should’ve done that sooner, huh?”
I nod, grinning. “Still, it was worth the wait.”
“Yes, it was,” she agrees, tracing circles on my shoulder. “I just find it strange that something has to threaten to tear us apart before we realize we belong together.”
I can’t tell her the truth...that I’d felt this way forever. That I’d never stopped loving her since that failed attempt to tell her so many years before. What’s past is past. We have only now.
“I know. We had to get a feeling of losing each other in order to truly find each other.” I stroke her cheek. “We’re a pair of fools, huh?”
“Then we’re perfectly suited for each other,” she says.
I plant a kiss on her forehead then fall silent, simply staring at her. She turns her back on me again, pulling my arms more tightly around her as she snuggles against me.
As the sun sets, we lie still, caught in the moment and by the time night has arrived, I find Clarissa already asleep.
I kiss her shoulder and press my cheek to hers as I close my eyes.
I still can’t believe she’s mine. A part of me still thinks she shouldn’t be but I don’t care anymore. How can I, when I’m just happy that my best friend is finally my lover, my girlfriend, my life.
Whatever happens, I’m not going to let anyone take her away from me.
I’ll die before I lose her again.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
~ Theo
AN AIR OF DEATHLY SILENCE reigns over the chamber, all the seats beneath the tapestries empty.
Standing in the middle of the chamber between Toshi and Sebastian, I wait patiently for the verdict of the Council. While I am not seriously worried, I think Toshi and Sebastian are less confident, and when the doors finally open again, I hold my breath, hoping that it is what we all hoped it will be.
One by one, the members of the Council, all shrouded in black, take their seats and once they are all seated, the oldest member, the last remaining Dragon, rises.
“I will ask you once more,” he says as he stands before me. “Are you sure that no one else is left to carry out Project Eden? That there are no survivors nor witnesses from either side?”
“Yes,” Sebastian answers. “We made certain of it.”
“Then we will let this matter go,” the Dragon announces.
I let out a breath of relief.
“However, let it be known that should another slaughter happen for whatever cause, there will be harsh consequences,” he adds.
“We understand,” I say, bowing my head, accepting this judgement with a certain amount of relief. It could have gone much worse.
“Then this matter is done. No more shall be spoken of Project Eden or the Cat Syllas. This will be the last time.”
He lifts the scroll in his hand and opening his mouth, reduces it to nothing with a fiery breath. Then he exits the chamber, the rest following him.
A separate set of doors, the ones we entered before, open and Toshi, Sebastian and I leave the room, walking down the long corridor towards the exit.
“Well, that’s done,” Toshi murmurs.
Sebastian throws him a warning glance.
“Theo!” Someone calls after me.
Turning around, I see the Chief of my tribe and I go to him, bowing low before him.
“Thank you for your clemency,” I tell him.
“Don’t thank me,” Chief Olwen says, shaking his head. “I wanted you punished for your uncharacteristic recklessness. As it is, I’m still punishing you. I will not be naming you the next Chief of our tribe whether you take a mate or not. You are not worthy.”
It hurts but it wasn’t unexpected. I bow my head lower. “I understand.”
He turns his back to me, heading to the opposite end of the corridor and I wait until he’s gone before I re-join Toshi and Sebastian, who have both surprisingly, waited for me.
“You were scolded, I see,” Toshi says.
“Were you exiled?” Sebastian asks.
“Just disqualified from being the next Chief,” I answer. “No matter. It’s a small price to pay. I’ve never wanted to be a Chief anyway.”
“A Wolf without a pack, a Cat deemed a traitor by other Cats and a Bear with no place in his tribe,” Toshi says, shaking his head. “We sure are a bunch of misfits.”
Sebastian and I don’t answer, not speaking until we’re far away from the building. At a cliff, we stop, staring at the horizon.
“So, what happens now?” Toshi asks.
“She chose Kyle,” I say. “We should be happy for them both.”
“I still think she made the wrong choice,” Toshi says, being petty when he should be thankful he’s still got his head firmly attached to his shoulders. Even so, I only just keep from clouting him behind the ear to remind him of that point.
“It’s her choice,” Sebastian points out.
“So, you think it’s really possible for her to live a normal, human life?” Toshi asks, raising one eyebrow.
We’re all silent for a moment.
“Not for the rest of her life,” Sebastian says thoughtfully. “But we’ll do our best to make sure she gets to for as long as possible.”
“We will,” I agree.
I don’t care what the prophecy says. I will protect Clarissa no matter what the cost.
We all will.
Epilogue
~ Igo
A Wolf. A Bear. A Cat.
In all my centuries of being in the Primal Council, never has an unlikely trio appeared in our hallowed chamber. In all my centuries of existence, I have never heard of them working together for a common cause. And yet, that is exactly what they seem to have done.
A common cause.
A knock on the door interrupts my thoughts.
“Come in,” I command.
The door opens and a small, black cat enters, a shiny cylinder hanging from his neck.
I take it and twist it, finding out that it contains a single item: a flash drive.
I insert it into my laptop, copying the files and then opening them one by one, a grin forming in my lips.
Those three liars have a common cause, alright.
Her name is Eve.
Or rather, Clarissa Wagner.
I clasp my hands together, licking my lips as I stare at her picture on my screen, that pale brown hair the same color as my fur.
It’s only a matter of my time before she becomes mine.
Eve.
I will find you.
