“I must congratulate you on the successful solution to the mystery,” he said. “A job well done, if I heard correctly.”
“The detectives did a magnificent job,” I said.
“Which might have ended poorly, if it wasn’t for a friendly fox.”
Ethan winked at me, and I smiled. Like anyone else, I enjoyed a bit of praise.
“Well, your quick work was highly impressive. My description on the Nocturnal Net drew many, many comments, all favorable. It seems there are more than a few supernatural creatures searching for a home. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them chose Goodsprings as a hospitable habitat.” He winked. “If you’ll excuse me, I must see to other guests.”
“What did he mean by supernatural creatures?” Ethan asked.
“I’m not sure we want to know,” Ada answered.
“Don’t we have enough already?” Mara asked.
“I have a feeling your library is going to get some use,” Tessa said to me.
“I think Mr. Bluth is exaggerating,” I said. “As soon as they learn of all the murders here, they’ll steer clear.”
“Not if the murders are solved,” Ada said. “It’s the unsolved murders that really bother people.”
“And we’ll have none of those with Sam on the job,” Mara said.
“Not me,” I protested. “Ada and Ethan. But let’s hope this night passes without something so wicked.”
“Hear, hear,” they said and held up their glasses. “No more murders.”
We touched glasses and sipped. I hoped the toast would ward off any would-be murderers, but I was far from certain.
Not with more supernatural beings moving in.
