“I can’t find Sarah, David, or Caitlin. Alister’s going door to door, demanding to know where his daughter is,” the elf said quietly.

  “You won’t find them.”

“And the others? I could go to Gormore on horseback to find out their fates.”

The wizard shook her head. “The strength of the Blood Throne may have weakened to the extent to which it cannot exert influence on anyone outside its lands, but I’m afraid you’d still be affected by the stain of darkness that runs deep into the ground.”

“Surely we must be able to eliminate this scourge on one day.”

“And one day we will. Or someone will. But we’ve won the battle for now. Take solace in that. The war continues, as it has for centuries. Another will rise. Another will fall. Until no other rises.”

The noises behind them were getting louder as the citizens of Thelmont were waking up. It was a resilient city and soon the battle would be a distant memory and recorded into the annals of history in a tome, tucked away on a shelf in the grand library. A tome that told a tale of legends, about how a wizard, an elf, and some lost travelers from a faraway land came to its aid right before the battle. A tale about the legendary Delmar, who reappeared after centuries away with his motley crew to beat back the savage warriors. A tale about how four brave individuals ventured deep underground and into the ruins of Gormore to defeat the Blood King.

“The others. Leo. Will we see them again?”

  “I don’t think so.”

“I’d have liked to have seen the world they came from.”

  “Me too.”
