I again used several photographic books of old East London that helped me visualise the streets that Nathaniel would have delivered coal to. These include East London Neighbourhoods by Brian Girling (Tempus, 2005), Dockland Life by Chris Ellmers and Alex Werner (Mainstream Publishing, 1991) and London’s East End by Jane Cox (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1994) Lastly, I would like to mention Lee Jackson’s brilliant website The Victorian Dictionary: http://www.victorianlondon.org/ and Liza Picard’s Victorian London (Orion Books, 2005), packed with little details of Victorian London life.
