  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I cannot express enough my gratitude to everyone at Walker for making this not only the most rewarding publishing experience I have ever had, but also the most fun. They bring an enthusiasm and a professionalism to the process that are rare and irreplaceable. So thank you to Michele Amundsen, Peter Miller, Maya Baran, Krystyna Skalski, Marlene Tungseth, Diana Drew for crackerjack copyediting, and Jackie Meyer for a knockout cover design. But mostly, I owe this book to the indefatigable, obsessive, maddening, and utterly wonderful George Gibson, who, if I have my wish, I will be able to torment (and vice versa) for many books to come.

Henry Dunow also deserves a deep thank you for his willingness to champion a difficult book that needed just the right home. Judge John Kane and Emily Bazelon were kind enough to read the manuscript for me and ask the important questions.

Then, of course, there is my family, Nancy, Emily, and yes, even Darwin, without whom all this effort would not have much point.
