“What? No, I’m not saying that any of this is a good idea, I’m just thinking that doesn’t it seem odd that he’s so hell-bent on finding me? Aren’t there other things in this world more powerful than me?”

“You’re right, Alex. There are many things. I don’t have an answer for you,” Morgan said quietly.

“You seem fairly certain that we can’t fight him,” Connor said stiffly.

“Oh, you can fight his army, and you can try to fight him, but how do you kill something made of something entirely intangible? He can’t be defeated unless magic ceases to exist. Which, by the way, would kill us all.”

  “Morgan?” I interrupted.

  “Yes?”

“Forgive the insensitivity, but why did he let you go? Or did you escape?”

She sighed, and leaned gently against the windowsill. “No, he let me go.”

  “Why?”

“Because, I had nothing left of value to him.”

  Connor’s eyes widened. “Morgan, not-”

“He took everything,” she lamented, her lone eye filling with water as she held up her palm to Connor. One single spark jumped off her middle finger.

“He took your magic?” I asked in shock.

“Everything. My magic, my ring, my eye, my life…” she trailed off. “I only have a few months before the hundreds of years catch up to me.” The last piece she was holding on to crumbled away as she started to sob. Connor reached out and hugged her.

I didn’t know what to say. Everything that had happened to her was all because of me. I was the catalyst.

I knew of only one thing. Despite her cautions, I knew I would fight. My life was only just starting to fit together, and I wasn’t ready to give it up. I couldn’t let Morgan’s loss be for nothing. I knew what I had to do.

Merlin is coming, and when he does, I will kill him.
