“Awww, baby, you didn’t have to get me anything.”

“Oh, hush,” he said as Ellie ripped open the candy-cane-covered paper, exposing a velvet box within. The top squeaked a little as she opened it, revealing a stunning necklace within. The gold pendant was intricately carved with the image of three women dancing in stunning relief.

“It’s beautiful.” Ellie sighed, running her fingers over the carving.

Alec moved behind her. “Let me take this one off and you can put it on.”

“No!” Ellie jumped away from him. “I can never take this off.”

“What?” Alec’s brows creased with confusion and hurt feelings.

“I must have forgotten to tell you with everything that’s happened.” Ellie sighed. “If I take this off, then my injuries will come back.” Alec’s eyes bulged at the news. “But the upside is it extends my lifespan. I have no idea by how much, but it basically links me to Tír na nÓg and the healing spring.”

“Wow.” Alec took a deep breath and shook his head. “Well, I guess I can return this necklace then.” He smiled at her and took her hand. “I can’t wait to find out how much it extends your life. Now, since I don’t have a Christmas present for you anymore, throw some clothes on and follow me.”

Ellie shimmied into one of Alec’s boxers and a T-shirt. She felt like a kid again, waiting for the surprise of Christmas morning. She followed Alec downstairs and almost all the way outside into the frigid December air.

“What are you doing?” Ellie yelled with a big smile on her face.

“Come out here,” Alec called. He was only in a T-shirt and sweatpants, but he seemed just as at home outside in December as he was outside in July. Ellie slipped into some flip-flops by the back door and followed him out, shivering almost immediately.

“What’re we doing out here?” she asked as she approached her love.

“This!” Alec grabbed Ellie and tugged her close to him as he lifted off the ground with his wings. He took them higher and higher until Ellie could see the whole island, and then he took them higher still. Ellie’s breath escaped her when she saw how high off the ground they were.

“Don’t drop me!” she whispered into his ear as her arms clamped onto him.

He laughed deeply at the tension in her voice. Ellie trusted him like no other, but she still didn’t want to die prematurely.

“Even if I dropped you, I would catch you before you hit the ground.” He smiled and kissed her forehead. “I can fly faster than you can fall. Now look.”

Ellie laughed. She had seen him flying and had no doubt that was true. She looked around for the first time since they had started circling at this height, and all she could see was stars. The island was so far off the coast from any major city there was barely any light pollution, especially not when they were so high up. The stars shone like diamonds in the velvet sky.

  “Alec, it’s so beautiful.”

“You’re more beautiful.” He kissed her head and rolled so her weight was on top of him. She tensed slightly. “Don’t look down, just look at me.” Ellie’s green-and-blue-fired eyes locked onto his own.

Alec withdrew a hand and retrieved something from his pocket. Her heart was in her throat as he stared up at her.

“Eilidh Fiona MacLeod, you have brought more joy and love into my life than I ever imagined possible. I don’t know what I’d do without you. You make me laugh every day and constantly surprise me. You fill me with wonder, and the sex we have is beyond amazing. I have never felt more complete than when I am in your arms. Would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?” Alec held the ring up and waited with bated breath.

For a moment Ellie didn’t know what to say. Tears were streaming down her face, and she was so full of joy she could burst.

“Yes! A million times yes!” She breathed when her brain clicked back in. She looked down at the ring, a stunningly huge oval sapphire framed by diamonds on all sides, making it look almost like a snowflake with a blue center. The band was a twisting circle of Celtic knots and diamonds.

“Are you going to give me a hand to put it on or just stare at it?”

“Ye expect me to let go of ye?” Ellie laughed. “That’s no’ likely to happen.”

Alec grinned and shook his head, jumping them back to their bedroom. When they were safely inside, he got down on one knee. Ellie was grinning like a maniac as she watched Alec go through it all again.

Alec smiled up at her. “You make me so damn happy I would defy Zeus and anyone else to be with you. So is the answer still yes?”

  “Of course it is!”

“I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t the magic of the starlight.” He winked at her as he slid the ring on her finger.

“Alec, this must have cost an absolute fortune!” Ellie’s breath caught when she saw how big the stone was in comparison to her finger.

“The stone’s been in the family for a while. I simply had it put into a ring.”

“It’s gorgeous and so was that flight and so are you! You crazy man!” Ellie’s smile wouldn’t quit. He had made her the happiest woman in the world. Ellie’s heart was filled to bursting with joy.

She smiled and trailed kisses from his mouth down his neck. He picked her up and carried her to bed, where she showed him exactly how happy she was. She couldn’t wait to marry him and call him her husband. Ellie sighed in contentment as Alec crushed her to him. Ellie didn’t think things could get any better, and then Alec kissed her again.
