"Let's check this out," said Josh.
"Why?" said Megan.
"Seems recent."
"So? Probably just the marauders from last night."
"Could be. You got somewhere you have to be?"
"No."
"Then I'm going to go check it out. You can wait here if you want."
"No I'll come."
Josh walked up towards the bodies. Megan followed. There was blood or ooze stains on the pavement. Someone had bashed in their heads, eventually.
"Looks like a bag," said Josh.
"Yeah," said Megan. She came closer.
Josh went over and pulled the bag out from under the zombie that had fallen on it. He opened it up. It was full of snack foods and candy bars.
"Jackpot," said Josh.
"You eat that stuff?"
"Unless you are packing something better I am."
"Fine," said Megan. "Give me a Payday."
"I thought you didn't eat this stuff?"
"Its peanuts," said Megan. "And stuff."
Josh took a few candy bars and some jerky. Then he handed the bag to Megan. "Can you handle that?"
"I'll manage."
They walked for a few more streets. Josh didn't see anything that looked very promising. The houses they passed weren't very sturdy. Most of them had already been broken into.
A block further on Josh saw a little lube shop. All the steel doors were down. It seemed intact.
"What do you think?" said Josh pointing to the lube shop.
"Not much there."
"It looks intact and most people won't go there searching for anything. Houses and stores are all targets."
"I see your point," said Megan. "The doors are all solid except for the glass ones."
"We can get paint and put it on them. Plywood if we can find any, to reinforce them."
"It should be easy to clear. Only three or four rooms."
"Well let's check it out anyways. You know, since we are here."
They walked down to the shop. Josh banged on the metal door. It was solid. He looked in the glass doors and didn't see anyone.
"I don't think there is anyone here," said Josh.
Then the door rolled up a foot and a young Mexican man rolled out with a pistol.
Josh held his arms out and backed away. "We were just looking for a place to stay. We didn't think anyone was here."
"I'm here," said Carlos. "Hey! That's my bag."
"We found the bag on the street with some zombies," said Josh. "But we are willing to share. She doesn't like candy much. But we should do it inside, before the marauders see us."
He motioned them in. Josh tossed his bags under the door and went in first. Megan did the same and followed.
"How long you been here?" said Josh.
"From the beginning," said Carlos. "I worked here. Where have you two been holing up."
"I just met her last night. Marauders burned her house. They tried to take my place too, but I burned it so they couldn't have it,' said Josh.
"I tried to leave here yesterday, to get to my brothers. The highway is plugged. Between marauders and zombies, I lost my van and my friends," said Carlos. "I'm Carlos."
"Josh."
"Megan."
"There is not much room here. Now that the water and electricity are out, it is going to be much harder to survive."
"The electricity is out?" said Megan.
"Yeah, the streetlights went out last night. Almost the whole city," said Carlos.
"Then it is really going to start to suck around here," said Josh.
"My van is loaded with more supplies. Unless the marauders found it. Its only a few miles from here."
"If we help you get it, we split it," said Josh.
"Sure," said Carlos. "There were four of us when I started out yesterday. We found a convenience store that hadn't been raided. Not the best, but you don't have to risk any buildings."
"Fine by me," said Josh.
"Whatever," said Megan.
"We will need to bring bags that we can carry. Its not packed for moving."
"Sounds like a plan then," said Josh. Not a plan he particularly liked. Being outside was dangerous, but they were going to need food and water. Or drink at least.
