When he stepped into the hallway outside the boardroom, he found JR and Rebecca waiting to be called to testify. “I don’t think they’re going to need you,” he said. “They’re already deliberating the proposal to send another expedition.”

Becca stood quickly. “Then I have patients to see to. JR, call me if they want us after all.”

“I will. Hey, I’ll walk you out,” he added. Summers said goodbye and strode down the hall toward the translation department to consult with Sinclair. He’d have something to say to the old rascal, surprising him like that. Mostly, he wanted an experienced linguist with which to discuss the meaning of the ban on weapons; both the fact of it and why it would have been necessary.

JR and Becca went in the opposite direction, toward the main exit.

“Becca, can I ask you something?” JR ventured.

“Sure, JR, anything,” she said with a warm smile.

“Would you like to go hiking with me tomorrow?”

“I’d love it! Pick me up at eight.”

“You bet,” agreed JR. Another early morning meant another night with no booze. He was getting used to it though, and a day with Becca all to himself was worth it.

Chapter 35 – You’ve Decided To Keep Me?

  Four months later

“What have you decided, JR, grad school or expedition?” Becca asked, knowing the answer even as she asked the question. She was standing in the kitchen, cooking breakfast as he came in fresh from his morning shower after an early morning run. She handed him a glass of orange juice.

“Expedition, of course. You don’t think I’d let you go back there without me,” he said, planting a kiss on the top of her head. Becca gave him a wicked grin and reached for the towel around his waist. She loved him all the time, but she especially loved him straight out of the shower and dressed in a towel that she could steal.

“Hey, none of that, you wanton woman,” he teased. “Why are you still here, don’t you have a baby to deliver or something?”

“My day off. If any babies want to come today, they’ll have to settle for whoever’s on call. Are you trying to get rid of me?”

“Never,” he declared, putting down the empty glass and pulling her into his arms, where she rested her face against the still-damp flesh. “What do you want to do today?”

“I thought I’d try to organize the spare room. It hasn’t been the same since you moved in and dumped all your old stuff in there,” she said, nuzzling the hollow between his pecs and his abs. “Seriously, do you still need all of that basketball equipment? And would you help me?”

“Of course. It’s only fair, since it’s my stuff. But that won’t take all day. What else?”

“Well, you complain so much about my pink frilly bedroom, would you like to go get some paint and redecorate?”

“Does that mean you’ve decided to keep me?”

“I guess. You’re like that puppy I rescued,” she said, pointing at the St. Bernard that was overflowing the sofa in the living room. “You grew on me, and now I can’t get rid of you.”

JR chuckled and lifted Becca off her feet, holding her with her face just above his. “You know you love me,” he said, lowering her for a kiss.

“As long as you don’t break house-training,” she said, twitching the towel away while he was distracted with putting her down on her feet.

  “Hey!”

Becca ran for the bedroom, laughing, with JR in hot pursuit. He caught her, which she’d counted on, and tossed her lightly onto the bed. The painting and organizing could wait, he thought, as he tenderly divested Becca of the robe that hid her curves from him. If he’d been able to think, he might have considered what an impact this woman had made on his life, but thinking wasn’t required at the moment.

JR skated his big palm across Becca’s silky skin, which rose in goose bumps at his touch. If she had been able to think, she might have marveled at the change in JR, the new confidence, the sobriety. But, she wasn’t doing much thinking either. Instead a sigh escaped her as they joined, both surrendering to the passion that claimed them, certain that they had a future together.
