  “Thank you.”

“It’s good she decided to come. My parents will enjoy her company tomorrow.” She paused. “I heard you talking with the caterer earlier.”

He joined her at the window. “Mm-hm.”

  “Anything wrong?”

“Nothing I can’t handle. Some kind of mix-up with the scheduling, so they might be a little short-staffed.”

  “How much is a little?”

Luca wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his hands on her barely-there bump. The children would be twenty months apart. She’d hesitated going off the mini-pill, but she wasn’t getting any younger. Besides, Luca claimed they had some catching up to do.

He kissed the side of her neck.

“You’re not going to tell me, are you?” she said.

“No need for you to worry, Bella. I have everything under control.”

She bent her head to give him better access. “Remind me why we’re doing this?”

“To keep you from showing off your brilliant culinary skills.”

“I keep telling you, that fire was not my fault. And the damage was minimal.”

  “Thank God,” he murmured.

At least the incident had convinced him that Isabelle’s fine motor coordination didn’t extend to the kitchen. He’d resigned himself to the fact that despite her love of good food, she was not destined to be the next Iron Chef. Good thing he enjoyed cooking.

“I meant, why are we hosting at all?”

“Because the only place large enough to fit all your family and mine and our friends is here.”

“My parents’ place is pretty big.”

“Yes, but then we wouldn’t get to see Alex and Samantha and Ross and Jane and Jake and his new inamorata.”

  “Her name is George.”

  “Who names their daughter George?”

“It’s short for Georgina. Be nice.”

He nipped her earlobe with his teeth. “I am always nice.”

“Really? I heard that you were pretty tough on some poor student who claimed he’d solved P vs. NP.”

  “He was an idiot.”

“I guess I should be grateful you don’t consider me an idiot.”

“It wouldn’t matter even if you were, Bella, because I love you.”

She shivered as his fingers traced a path up her ribs. “You mean that as a compliment, right?”

  “Of course.”

She turned and smiled, lifting her face up to his. “I love you too.”
