He needed answers.
His radio buzzed.
He knew something was wrong the second he heard the base commander speak to him in colloquial language.
“Betchly, do you read? Gareth?”
Gareth wasn’t sure how to respond. “I … Betchly in. Who … what is this?”
“Go home, Betchly. Just … just go home.”
The line went crackly. Gareth thought it sounded like the base commander was in pain.
“Repeat,” Gareth said, trying to keep his cool. “I didn’t quite—”
“Just go the fuck home, Betchly. If you have family, go to them before it’s—it’s too late. If it isn’t already too late. We’ve lost it.”
The mention of family brought a chill down Gareth’s spine. “Lost what?” he asked.
The line cracked again.
“Hey. We’ve lost what?”
“We’ve lost everything,” the voice said.
Then, out of nowhere, the man screamed in agony.
The transmission went dead.
