"Of all my kids, you're my favorite," Dad slurred to Dyer, leaning heavily on my mate.
Dad had insisted on throwing us a mating party because as the alpha's son, Dyer deserves it, but in reality, I was pretty sure he just wanted another excuse to break out some of Hester's Brew that Briec had talked Young into bringing over.
There were zero vampires in Purdy, so there had been a few freaked-out shifters when the man had poofed up directly in the middle of the leap house, already mostly plastered. He'd handed a mostly empty bottle to Briec, and a full one to Dad, saluted sloppily and said, "Back to Shawberry," and disappeared.
Papa had walked in about the time Dad had uncorked the crazy-looking bottle, and when their eyes met, the chase was on. I still wasn't completely sure where Dad had stored Papa, but apparently Ward had already left to go get him, so it must not have been anywhere too bad, Of course, Dad had used the time away to get hammered.
"I'm sure your actual kids will be so happy to hear that," Dyer said patiently, patting Dad's arm and meeting my gaze for a mutual eyeroll.
Dad grabbed both sides of Dyer's face, and my poor mate looked as worried as I felt. "You've seduced my son into staying in Purdy." Jerking Dyer forward, he kissed him hard on the cheek, only…
"Okay, that was too close to my mouth, Uncle Benny!" Dyer said, putting his hand over my father's face and giving him a shove.
"Well, there are two of you and your cheeks are this far apart." He made an attempt at making a measurement, but even when he closed one eye and held the other open with two fingers, he couldn't seem to come up with a proper size, so he dropped his arms and shrugged. "I figured split the difference and went for it."
I blinked in surprise when a disheveled… and mostly dripping Fields walked right up to my dad and grabbed his shoulders, looking panicked. "Where's your witch?"
My stomach dropped out as I looked around for the nutty redhead, knowing immediately this had to do with Presley and the fact that he wasn't standing there right then, next to Fields.
"Are you hitting on me?" Dad slurred, narrowing his eyes on the raven shifter.
"Bennett, please," he whispered, sounding genuinely distressed. "I can't find Presley. I'm worried the witch who put a tracking spell on him came for him." He gave my father a slight shake. "I need the redhead."
"Okay, Fields," I said, pulling out my phone. "I'll call her."
Dyer reached out, laying a hand over my phone and shaking his head. "No need. Presley is here. He's in the gym… with Carter and Hollyster."
I cringed. There was only one thing those three would be working on in the gym… but with Carter and Hollyster, there would probably be knives involved.
Fields sighed, the tension visibly leaving his body. "I'm both relieved and terrified by that. He slipped out of the house while I was taking a shower. He's so fucking frustrating. Doesn't he realize how dangerous it is for him in this world? If he'd just let me mate him, things would be so much easier for him."
"There were two guards with him, Fields. I promise, I would have lectured him if he came here alone, and he knows that," Dyer said, reaching out to pat our friend as Dad stumbled away.
"Hey," I said after a long moment, turning to pull my mate into my arms.
"Hey."
"I just heard from Myers that we've had four other cases involving the glowing chosen marks. Briec has already been by to check, and every one of them was confirmed to be the same thing as with mine and Presley's. We need a list of all the chosen that live close to Purdy, so we can do welfare checks."
Dyer sighed, nodding before he let his head drop to my chest. "That's going to be a lot. Should we check with Crossville?"
"I already have. They haven't had any reported cases. For some reason, she is focusing on this area. Briec thinks that after the witch located one, she simply expanded her grid and found a shit load of us. The problem is, she is doing this location spell for a reason. At some point, she is going to come for someone… or maybe quite a few someones."
"For now, everyone is accounted for, and at least they know to be on their guard. All we can do is try to enjoy this craziness Bennett put together and wait until Kross finds what kind of stone we're dealing with."
"Okay, but holding you like this makes me want to sneak off and see if you can't get me with child."
"Get you with child?" he asked dryly, giving me a very unimpressed look.
"Impregnate? Knock-up? Fill with your baby juice?"
"Hmm. Definitely fill you with my baby juice. I like to use technical terms whenever possible."
