  MOUNTAIN MAN’S FEVER (SAMPLE)

  A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

  DESCRIPTION

Why did my brother’s best friend have to be so damn sexy?

Teddy was back, and lightning strikes the same place twice.

I didn’t want to say no to him anymore.

I was shocked to find out who Callie was.

Before she was a memory from long ago.

A damn good one, I might add.

Now she was my best friend’s sister.

  And my new boss.

  It’s complicated.

And seeing her naked in my mind every meeting isn’t helping.

Teddy tended to show up at just the right moment.

Each time he’s popped into my life at a bad time, making it better.

I couldn’t forget the way I felt in his arms or underneath him.

The way his teeth felt nibbling on my neck…

Teddy was still the man that I desired.

Still the man that I wanted to feel deep inside me.

  Chapter 1

  Callie

I was done with Qing. It just wasn’t working out. I’d tried, I really had. We had lived together for the last six months and in that time, I worked hard trying to make it work. But at some point, a person had to wonder if it was even worth it. Was a relationship really supposed to be this hard?

Qing finally left in a cab with most of his belongings in the trunk. He said he would be back and I told him that everything else would stay on the porch for when he wanted it. I didn’t hate him, not in the least bit, but I didn’t want to be with him anymore. It was a hard decision to make, but relief was already winning out. I didn’t want to fight anymore and now that he was gone, there was a calm that came over me. It was what I’d wanted this whole time and I hadn’t even realized it.

So even though it was what my heart had really wanted all along, now I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do with myself. We’d had plans and now I had to make new ones with just me.

It was quiet in the apartment and I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to stand it right now. I needed to get out and since Eve wasn’t here to tell me how bad of an idea it was, that I was on rebound and was going to regret it, I went out to do some drinking and dancing. I didn’t have a plan of what I was going to do of course, but I knew that I was going to have some fun. If that included a hot guy at the club, well then so be it. I wasn’t opposed to it by any stretch of the imagination. Truth was, I was ready to get tipsy and mingle. It just seemed like the thing to do and I was ready for something new in my life.

I got out the little black dress that I kept in the back of the closet just for these sorts of occasions and I have to say that I was worried about how short it was. Maybe I was getting older, but it seemed short. I hadn’t worn it in a while and I tried to ignore how naked I still felt with it on. This was the style of the times and even though I wasn’t used to it anymore, it was what I had to wear if I was going to go out. I couldn’t hide it all away like I usually did. I wanted all eyes on me for a little while and this was a sure way to get it.

I ran my hand over my sides in the soft mesh material and turned to one side and then the other. The dress flattered my thin form. It added a little more volume and my legs were impossibly long in it. That was the look I was going for.

Pushing the dark brown hair back from my face, I put a little smoky eye makeup on, before kissing my reflection in the mirror. How long had it been since I’d been out? The need in my own light brown eyes told me that it had been far too long. I felt like a cat out on the prowl. I wasn’t just mindlessly going to get out. In the back of my head, I had a definite plan in motion.

  ***

The place was packed when I got there and a part of me almost talked the other part of me into just leaving before I even got there. The confidence that I felt in the mirror was gone and I was second guessing what I was doing here. The line was long to get in and it didn’t seem like this place was going to be worth the time. The line was moving super slow and I didn’t want to wait in line.

About the time I was going to give up on it all, one of the bouncers in the front called me over and let me go in. I went in front of several other people and I didn’t look back or make eye contact. I know that it wasn’t the best thing to do, but I didn’t want to wait forever either. If he thought I was cute and I could bypass all that, I was okay with a few dirty looks.

I was going to have to be or I could go home. Since home had entirely too much quiet for my brain, I just tried my best to ignore it. It was the way of things and I didn’t make the rules.

When I got inside, I was blasted with the sounds of the band on stage. This was not the sort of club that I’d thought it was. The music was a little harder and it was rock instead of something that I could dance to. This was not at all what I had in mind and again I was ready to leave.

Why hadn’t I known that this place was like this? It didn’t make sense. I could have sworn that I’d been here before. Had it changed owners?

After a minute inside the pumping music, I realized the good side of it all was the fact that I couldn’t think. The music was so loud that I literally couldn’t think and that helped. I wanted to forget Qing and why I was here in the first place. If nothing else, I could have a couple of drinks and the yelling on stage would drowned out all the rest of it. I didn’t want to go back out there past the dirty looks I’d passed before, so a couple of drinks in me would help till I found somewhere more suitable for what I really had in mind for the night.

I got to the bar and ordered a beer, as well as a couple of shots. The shots were to get my nerves less frazzled and the beer was just for taste. It had been far too long since
I’d had a beer. It had been against Qing’s religion to imbibe and while I’d respected his position, I really missed drinking. It was one of those things that we don’t realize how much we’re going to miss it until it’s gone.

The shots went down with a burn and the beer was enough to set me right and cool the burning. I looked around the packed club and I could see several men that interested me. My mind was changing on the suitability of the bar for my needs. I wasn’t here with a friend. I was looking for a man to keep me company for the night, so we didn’t have to have much in common. I wasn’t the sort to drink alone, so I wanted to find someone that looked like they were here alone as well. I don’t know why, but I just felt like everything was happening tonight for a reason. For some reason or another, I’m supposed to be here. Right here. Right now.

A few minutes later I was chiding myself for such thoughts. The liquor must have kicked in for a minute there. I wasn’t here but because I was thirsty and lonely and hadn’t known what to do on a Saturday night. I’d stayed home with Qing most of the time while we were dating, and I was ready for a change of pace.

“You look like the weight of the whole world is on your shoulders.”

  “Yeah?”

I turned around to the voice and was eye level with a hard chest. I had to crane my neck quite a way to see the man’s face that was looking down at me with a grin.

His hair was a dirty blonde color and his jawline was about as chiseled as his arms were. The light blue eyes that stared down at me made me smile a little too much. A giddiness came over me and I had to wonder what was going on. The guy was hot, but most men didn’t make me feel this way. I was just barely shaking inside, and I couldn’t seem to stop it. Had it been that long that I was this bad off?

“Not the whole world. Just my hemisphere. Callie, nice to meet you.”

I put my hand out to shake his. I wanted to feel the contact of his hand and it was as I thought it would be. Just that small touch left its mark on my fingers. They were tingling when I pulled my hand away.

  “Hi Callie. I’m Ted.”

“You don’t look like a Ted.”

“Well I look less like a Theodore, so Ted it is.”

I giggled at his answer and the fact that he could at least have a sense of humor. It seemed to be a dying quality as of late. Qing had been very perturbed with half of my jokes.

“So, what brings you here Ted? The music?” I had to practically yell over the drums in the song even though we were so close together.

  “You.”

He was a smooth talker and his answer made me smile. I would give that to him if nothing else, but the way I was feeling suddenly, he wouldn’t have had to say much to get me. He had this slick smile on his face and it was hard not to smile back his way. I was under some sort of spell for a second there and I couldn’t break contact with those impossibly blue eyes.

“Me, huh. Well here I am. Now what?”

“We could go back to my place and see what happens? I have a feeling that I have just what the doctor ordered.”

My smile got a little bigger because of his audacity, but at the end of the day, it was what I was looking for. I didn’t want a long courtship. The sexual attraction is there and that’s all that’s really needed in the long run.

  “You don’t waste time.”

  “Life is short.”

“YOLO huh?” I giggled because I couldn’t help it. This guy was full of crap, yet entertaining. I couldn’t believe a word coming from between his lips, but for some reason I didn’t care. I just had this feeling being around him.

“It is short. So, I take it that you here for some fun?”

“I was here for the music and seen you standing there. I couldn’t say no.”

  “To what?”

  “You.”

  “But I didn’t ask anything.”

“You didn’t ask with your mouth, but your eyes say it all. You’re in need.”

I don’t know if that was another line or if he could really tell that by looking at me. I felt like I was in need, badly. Things had been very tense for a while with Qing and that meant that I hadn’t been able to get much in the way of attention in a while. My body was ready for something more and the man looking down at me made me wonder if he was just what I needed.

  “Really?”

“Yeah. I could see it from across the room. It’s been a while huh? I bet you’re already wet.”

The last part he whispered in my ear, getting so close that his lips barely touched a bit of my earlobe. It made me shiver even harder and he was right to think that. Damn it, I was already wet.

  Chapter 2

  Theodore

“Let’s get out of here. We both know what we want.”

I don’t know why I thought it would work, but there was something in her eyes that told me that it would. She looked horny as hell and I could work with that. Callie was tall, and her brown hair was mid-back level. She was just my type and the more I looked at her, the more I wanted her tight body against me. I hadn’t thought that I would be here for a woman. I had come alone for a reason. Now I wanted to think that the reason was Callie and not just another night of drinking.

“You want to just get out of here? Just like that?”

  “Why now?”

“Because I don’t know you for one. You could be some serial killer or something.”

“Yes, well that is why we can get out of here and go back to my place. We’ll get to know each other well that way. I don’t want to kill you Callie, but I do want to eat you until you scream.”

Callie smiled at me and she kind of shook her head like she couldn’t believe what I was saying. I couldn’t either. It wasn’t like me, but I didn’t have the forethought to say it any other way. I wanted her. She wanted me. Why did it have to be complicated?

  “Okay.”

  “Okay?”

” Yeah, let’s go get to know each other.”

I was a bit surprised if I was honest with myself. I wasn’t surprised at the fact that I had been able to pull it off. I was shocked really that a girl like Callie was going to just leave with me like that. I figured she had a lot on her mind for her to make such a decision. I should have worried about it, but I really didn’t. I knew that no matter what, if given the chance, I was going to hold onto this one.

My place wasn’t far from the bar. It was temporary. I was only here a couple of months for work and then I would be back in the city where I belonged. While Indianapolis wasn’t the smallest city in the country, it felt like it when I looked out and didn’t see skyscrapers like I was used to.

“So, are you from here Callie?”

She was looking around the condo and I could tell that she wasn’t impressed. I hadn’t brought much, so everything was already here when I got here. The company rented the place and I wasn’t too happy with it myself. It was bland and a bit cold. Not what I was used to.

“Yeah. I always wondered what these things looked like on the inside. I don’t know if I would pay what they were asking.”

She was talking about the building and I was thinking about the girl. I wasn’t here to talk about real estate. I wanted her, and I wanted to give her what her eyes said she needed. The look was still there, and I was going to make sure that I took advantage of it. I didn’t want to lose her in a mundane conversation.

“The company rents it, not me. It will do.”

I was trying to get her back in the mood and she smiled at my answer. “Should have known you weren’t from here. Do you have anything to drink?”

Going to the fridge, I told her what there was. About the only thing I did have was a couple of beers, whiskey and some wine.

“Wow, you’re a die-hard bachelor huh? Not even a bottle of ketchup.”

She told me that she wanted some whiskey and again I had to wonder what was going in her head that made it necessary to drink. Callie didn’t seem the type. If I was a better man, I would have asked what
was going on and listened. But I apparently wasn’t that good of a man because I was more than a little content just to let it all play out and see what happened.

After a couple of sips from her glass, Callie smiled up at me and asked me for a tour. I didn’t know if she was wanting to see it legitimately because it was a new construction or because of something else. For being so sure when I left the bar what she wanted, now I wasn’t sure at all. I don’t know if this was how it was all supposed to go down or not.

Callie was not the sort of girl that I was used to. Most girls that I chose for the night didn’t have much in the way of an ability to carry on a conversation anyways.

We got upstairs, and she seemed genuinely interested in the place and less interested in me. I was starting to think that I’d made a mistake when I imagined what she wanted. Did I just see it all in her eyes because that’s what I wanted to see? But if that was the case, why was she here?

  “So, is this your bedroom?”

It obviously was. I nodded my head and she smiled as she moved behind me to shut the door. There was no one else there, but Callie wanted some privacy. I wanted to see that as a good sign. I turned back to her and she was starting to pull the dress off and over her head. The sign was getting a whole lot stronger now.

My eyes took in the smooth, long legs that went on for days. Her thighs were soft, and I wanted to touch them. They were perfect, and I couldn’t keep my eyes away for several moments. Her black panties were lacy and barely covered anything. Callie’s stomach was flat, and it trembled as the dress was pulled off completely.

She stood there looking at me, wanting a reaction to what she had just revealed to me. I had a reaction all right and it was clear to see if she looked in the right place. Callie was gorgeous as hell and I couldn’t stop looking. My mouth was starting to salivate just looking at her. Her body was perfect and curved in all the right places. I waited for her to take off the rest and after a moment, my scrutiny got my way. I like to think that she took off her bra and stepped out of her panties because I willed it so. It was most likely far tamer than that.
