Nothing is Certain Page 16

Nikki walked past and waved at the couple. Mary called her over, asking if she wanted a reading. “No thanks; I have an appointment.” Nikki laughed and walked into the front entrance. She met Chris sitting at the bottom of the stairs. She saw Ray and Jen in the large living room, trying to figure out a video game where they had to shoot zombies. Nikki held out her hand; Chris took it. Together they walked up to the watchtower. Opening the door, Nikki saw Shane and Hayley spring apart, both looking rather embarrassed.

Nikki smiled at Hayley, who returned the smile. “How’s our friend doing?” Nikki asked Shane. Shane punched up the camera. The lone zombie wandered back and forth by the fallen log. He followed a small path he had worn into the forest floor.

“He seems to be doing OK.” Shane smiled as he followed Hayley down the stairs. Nikki smiled at Chris as the door closed.

“Hey, Nik.” Chris smiled as he approached her.

“She prefers Nikki.” Shane’s muffled voice could be heard from behind the door.

Nikki laughed as Chris wrapped his arms around her.
