After he sat her in a kitchen chair, and Delanie got her some ice for her head, Karma sat across from her and frowned.

“Tell us what happened,” Karma said softly.

“Caia,” Maggie answered and looked around at everyone. “Crompton has her Mother.”

“How do you know that?” Jackson asked her.

“She told me she was sorry, but she had to do it to save her Mother,” Maggie answered.

  “Do what?” Dylan asked.

“I don’t know. I asked her that, but she just shook her head. I guess she knocked me out with something when I turned toward the stairs when the shooting started. I’m sorry. I let her get out.”

“It isn’t your fault,” Johnson reassured her as he rubbed her shoulders gently.

“It’s no one’s fault except Crompton’s,” Jackson said and looked around at everyone.

“She gave him the address of the house,” Jensen told them, and all eyes snapped toward him. “It’s here in a text message exchange between the two of them. He told her he has her Mother, and the only way to save her is to tell him where we were staying and to come with him when he got here.”

“We have to find her,” Delanie said and looked at Jackson.

  “We will,” Karma assured them.

“And we will find Crompton,” Jensen added.

“Yes,” Johnson agreed and looked down at Maggie. “We will find Crompton, and we will put an end to him once and for all.”

“Then let’s get packed,” Karma said. “We have a vampire to hunt.”

  Epilogue

“Where’s my Mom?” Caia asked from the back seat of the SUV they’d been in for the past few hours.

“Your Mother is dead, child,” he answered her. “She’s been dead for weeks.”

“You lied to me,” she said, and he chuckled.

“I lie to everyone,” he responded.

“Why? What do you want with me?”

“You, young Murray, are the one who will turn things around for me.”

“Like hell,” she spat. “First chance I get, I’ll kill you.”

“That’s very big talk from someone so young,” he replied and smirked at her. “But, you see, since I can no longer have Karma, who was my first choice to stand beside me while I form my army, I will have you.”

“I’m just a kid!” She gasped.

“For now,” he responded. “But you will age, and as you do, you will become mine.”

“I’ll kill myself first,” she told him and moved to open the door, only to find it locked.

“Oh no, child,” he told her and chuckled. “You will live, and the moment you turn eighteen, I will make you mine, and we will create an army together.”

“And what of the ones you were creating in Florida?”

“That experiment failed, and I had to kill the subjects,” he responded. “Now hush and get some rest. We have a long way to go yet.”

“Where are we going?” She asked.

“My dear Caia, we are heading back to where it all began for me,” he responded. “We are heading back to where I first met your Father.”

“California,” she said quietly, and he grinned, but didn’t answer.

“Sleep,” he told her, and she closed her eyes.

Instead of sleeping, she planned. She’d somehow get away and she’d somehow let Jackson know where they were, but first she needed a plan.

“Sleep,” he said again, and chuckled when she jumped a little.

“Fine,” she snapped, and settled back into the seat.

As she drifted off, she thought of how she could get away from him and as sleep finally found her, she dreamed of Jackson and the life he’d promised her.
