Tess laughed. “I don’t know,” she said, drawing the words out and shaking her head. “Are you sure you understand what you’re asking? If you want reality, you’ll get it here. A meddling mother-in-law and an aunt who’s worse. A belligerent preteen daughter. And a wife who gets rebellious at times, too.”

  “Yes, I’m sure.”

  A flash of movement against a windowpane caught his eye. Nate and Roselynn and Ellamae had all gathered at the dining room window and stood smiling down at him.

  He smiled back, then looked at Tess again. “Don’t worry about me,” he said. “After riding my share of angry bulls, I can handle a few ornery women.”
