Jude turned the key and let herself into the ski school shop, the foosty smell of the air inside betraying the fact that the place had lain unused for weeks.
Once the ski season started, this was usually her domain; selling a few ski essentials like hats and goggles, taking bookings for Allan and the ski school up the hill, and doing her graphic design work in the quiet spells. But everything looked tired and jaded. It needed a refit, not just a lick of paint and a can of polish. She sighed. More money.
Switching the lights on and moving over to the counter, Jude put down the keys and the post. Under the counter were piles of paperwork and an overflowing 'in' tray — another legacy of the summer break and Allan's trip to New Zealand to work the winter season there, during the northern hemisphere summer.
Quickly, she found the most recent bank statement for the business account, and her sense of dread grew. No wonder the automatic transfer to their joint account had failed. There had been no payments from Allan for over six weeks now, and the account was empty.
Her insides turned to ice. Had something happened to him? When she thought about it, she hadn't heard from him for a while, although the last time they'd spoken he'd said he was going 'off the grid'. But he usually connected with civilisation at some point. Why hadn't he phoned? Should I be contacting the police?
