by Rose, Ashley
About halfway through the sketch, she was pretty sure he’d fallen asleep, so she swiveled her hips over his and he came awake. A quick flash of pleasure appeared on his face as he pushed his hips off the carpet but then his expression relaxed as he settled back down again.
“Fucking tease.”
She just smiled and shaded around his eyes, taking her time. She was done with the sketch a few minutes later. Flipping the sketchbook closed, she tossed it onto the bed and leaned over to kiss Travis on the lips.
“Done?” he asked when she pulled away.
“Yep.”
He sat up, sliding her off of his body, and inspected her knees. “No rug burn.”
“Nope. Unless you’ve got some on your ass.” She pushed him over and checked, but there was nothing but smooth skin and muscle. She gave him a light tap on the ass before rolling over onto her back. “I could get used to this.”
He stood and pulled on boxers. “Used to what?”
“This.” She gestured from the floor. “You and me.”
“We’ve been dating for two weeks; you’re not used to it already?”
“I don’t know, I guess I’m just waiting until you stop surprising me.”
He grinned down at her. “Baby, that’s gonna take a while.”
“I’m just having a hard time grasping it, I guess.”
“I keep telling you.” He pulled her to her feet. “Being a couple makes sex more interesting, not less.”
“So you keeping telling...and showing me. But there has got to be some point when it becomes monotonous.”
“Maybe when we’re fifty.”
She paused, his hands still on her arms. “You plan on being with me until we’re fifty?”
He blinked but his expression was unreadable. “I...I didn’t really mean it like that, but…I mean...you know.”
“No, I don’t know.”
“I like you a lot, Jaz, more and more every day.”
It was tough to comprehend. She was beginning to feel as socially idiotic as her roommate Lily.
Travis leaned down and peered at her. “I didn’t mean to spook you—it just slipped out, it didn’t really mean anything.”
Her first reaction was to pull away, snap at him for coddling her. But she’d come to realize it wasn’t coddling, it was just Travis being Travis. Boyfriend-Travis wasn’t much different from Regular-Travis, just a bit more caring and cuddly. But over these past two weeks it still hadn’t hit her. They were playing the part of a couple, and Travis was giving his all to her. But she was still being Regular-Jaz, not Girlfriend-Jaz. She was still guarded, still awkward when he showed affection.
“Jaz? You all right?”
There it was again. The caring. The concern that she didn’t know what to do with. Did she care about him the same amount? Was that required for this to work? She thought about last week, when he’d been stressed over his dad being admitted to the hospital. She’d hugged him; told him it would be okay, given him a back rub to help him sleep. And she thought about just a few days ago, when he’d cut himself while cooking and she had been so worried she’d insisted on driving him to the hospital for a cut that ended up only needing a Band-Aid. Whenever he stressed over anything—homework, money, his sister—Jaz was there, just as worried.
“Okay, you’re starting to freak me out.”
She blinked and focused her eyes. She’d been staring at his chest. She looked at the smooth, tanned skin that she’d cuddled against, kissed, sucked, bitten and licked. Without thinking, she wrapped her arms tightly around his torso and pressed her face against him.
“Oh.” Travis’ arms went around her also. “Okay.”
She hugged him as tightly as possible, probably squeezing the air out of him and mumbled into his chest, “I wanna be with you when we’re fifty too.”
He laughed, his chest rumbling. “All right then. Sounds like a solid plan.”
