A rustle in the brush alerted her, and Sydney stiffened. Is it…could it be them? Again she sniffed the air, but still she couldn't detect her mates. My mates…her heart thumped, and her breathing became quick and shallow. Calling them that caused a thrill to shiver up her spine, and her nipples went rigid as their touch, the feel of their hot, hard bodies against her caressed the memories in her mind. Despair at the duality of her emotions set, her heart, her desire for them battling doubt and the fear that they felt no love for her at all. Maybe this was just a game to them.

The bushes rustled again. Sydney's heart thumped. Quickly she rose to her feet keeping her eyes firmly fixed to the area where the movement was coming from.

There…something was definitely there, emerging, but it wasn't Arjim and Calem, or even a person for that matter. Whatever it was, it…a foul odor filled the air.

"Ick!" Sydney's face contorted, and she pinched her nose to block the awful smell.

A strange, blubbery creature with a reddish, plush coat covering its upper back edged from the bushes. The rest of its body was bare, but the same color as the Mohawk strip of fur striping the top of it. Sydney stared wide-eyed at the peculiar animal but hoping it didn't see her. She had no idea if it would become aggressive or behave like a skunk and spray her, and she had nothing remotely close to a weapon to fight it off with. Snapping hell! She wished she was more educated about this planet and its inhabitants. It would be beneficial to know what to do about this particular situation.

Sydney continued to watch the creature carefully as it stretched to nearly four feet long and then slithered along the ground like and oversized slug. Abruptly it stopped, and hunched the middle of its back. Two holes opened up at its snout, and the thing snorted so forcefully a dust cloud from the dirt whirled around it. The blob then rolled into a tight ball just as a potato bug would have done to protect itself, but instead of lying motionless it bounced across her path, disappearing opposite of where it came from, taking the stench with it.

"Ha!" Sydney couldn't help but laugh. That was bizarre. "Claire would get the biggest kick out of this planet."

Claire…Again her mood darkened as she thought about her best friend. Sydney's chest tightened. Tears welled in her eyes. To never see Claire again? She suddenly missed her terribly. "I have to find a way to get back home."

Home…Thinking about Earth as home somehow felt foreign. Tertia seemed more like home to her. Even so, Sydney considered her military obligations. This was the ultimate goal to anyone involved in space exploration, including Sydney herself, and now she was the one who found it, intelligent life on another planet! Well alright, maybe it found her. Nevertheless it was her duty to report back to the United States Government and let them know.

"Whoa." Sydney allowed that undertaking to sink in for a moment. Those are damn big shoes to fill! She gulped knowing it was highly unlikely the government could keep this top secret for very long. The media would have a feeding frenzy. Returning to Earth with this kind of information would spread across the globe in nanoseconds. Her private life would be over. "Oh hell, who am I kidding? They're never going to let me return to Earth anyway."

Sydney scratched the side of her head and glanced around. "What the snap apples am I supposed to do now?"

She knew that the safest thing to do would be to stay put, and hope Bligh would return for her, but she was thirsty, and her rumbling stomach was poking at her to find food. She emptied the rhyton and then remembered the hover cycle.

Sydney approached the bushes where Bligh had hidden it and opened the compartment to inspect it. There was nothing else inside. She activated the hover cycle and then glided it backwards and out of the bushes. She examined the other compartment but it was empty.

"Not much of a boy scout are you Bligh?" Sydney frowned. "So much for eating."

Apparently Bligh had little time to prepare for going on the lam. Sydney climbed onto the hover cycle and picked a direction, steering the vehicle slowly as she carefully scrutinized her surroundings, proceeding cautiously just in case that blobby thing was still nearby. If it reacted anything like a skittish skunk, being doused in that horrible odor was the last thing she wanted. After seeing no sign of the creature, Sydney began to relax a bit, though there was still the issue about this trek to nowhere she embarked on and of course the fact she was being hunted like a rabid animal. Would Calem and Arjim be amongst the hunters?

  Come to us, Sydney…

She gasped and froze, waiting, wondering…their voices…had they spoken in her mind? They couldn't have. Or could it be the strength of their link was pushing through the now weakening block in her head? She listened again but all she could hear was the sound of her own breathing.

A breeze brushed air over her still perspiring skin, cooling her, and Sydney shivered. Her eyes closed and her body swayed with the warm breeze that rustled in the air as her thoughts turned inward and their essence took hold of her. It faded quickly. Opening her eyes, she glanced around, seeing nothing but the trees, and it disappointed her. She should still be angry with them, but her anger was disintegrating. Every fiber inside of Sydney was being beckoned by them, something from within, something visceral and enthralling. It was as if her senses had been honed down to a pinpoint focus, and it was aimed directly on that…that scent. Her secret playmates… those two men whose mingling scent captured her interest even as they were attempting to capture her. Sydney inhaled through her nose in eager anticipation to erase the years of longing and fill the aching emptiness, but she detected nothing. Calem and Arjim were nowhere around.

"I love you," Sydney whispered. Oh god at the moment loving them hurt! Sydney tossed her head back and wailed, her voice echoing. "I didn't ask to come here!"

The frenzied shrills of those strange, four-winged birds she'd seen about resonated around her, the flock rising from the trees and flapping frantically as they fled through the air. Crying out loudly had been grave mistake.

Movement…He dashed in front of her, male flesh, muscles flexing, black hair flying all around his head--he didn't look at her--or did he? He sprang from the bushes like a cat, the site of him fleeting as he crossed her path. She hit the brakes, her heart now pounding wildly in her chest. That was definitely a man. Staring at the brush he vanished into, Sydney waited, breath bated. Would he come back?

  He did.

A roar rent the air--a flash of movement, and the cycle teetered. Sydney shrieked and hit the accelerator as she found herself staring directly at the head of a very erect penis. Her eyes widened, and then she jerked her head back. A man stood over her, balancing himself on the cycle's hover rim.

  A Prowler!

He smiled lecherously, his irises glittering gold, and when one of his hands reached to grab her Sydney shrieked again while scurrying further back on the seat. They hit a tree.

  Oops…

He fell towards her as she tumbled back somersaulting off of the seat's edge and thumping to the ground. Apparently she'd forgotten to activate the collision avoidance mechanism. Without further consideration of injury to either of them, Sydney sprang to her feet and took off running.

She failed to get very far. In front her, a man, a stepped from behind the trees and onto the path, someone unfamiliar to her. He folded his arms, his stance imposing and a bit intimidating. He stared at her as if he could merely pin her with his gaze, his eyes on her pointed and intense. Except for the baldric he wore strapped across his chest, he was of course, completely naked. He grinned menacingly and stepped toward her, his nakedness and aroused condition only adding to his formidable demeanor.

Panic stole her air and she nearly fainted. She tried to inhale but only managed a terrified squeak. It was then Sydney remembered what she was supposed to be doing.

Oh fucking snap! Her own voice echoed in her head. Run!

"Run!" Alea appeared out of nowhere and snatched Sydney up by the wrist. She ran with her, and all Sydney could think about at the moment was that she was beginn
ing to feel like a helpless little child who was in constant need of rescuing. Her wrist had been snatched up more times on this planet as an adult than she could ever remember as a child.

Alea stopped abruptly, fell back against a tree trunk and gasped for air. She looked right and then left to see of the coast was clear.

"Are they Bligh's mates?" Sydney gulped, attempting to regain her own normal breaths. "No, no." Alea drew in another hearty gulp of air and then blew it out. She then dragged

her fingers through her hair before continuing. "Prowlers, mated Esotarian males."

"Good lord." Sydney exclaimed "Those guys are damn intimidating. No wonder virgins hide from them."

"They're all intimidating when they're prowling." Alea gave a pat to Sydney's upper arm indicating for her to follow. "Come on."

She then continued on through the trees until they reached a small stream. Alea fell to her knees to scoop some taw into her mouth. Sydney did the same.

"I passed over this stream when I came searching for you." Alea coughed and sucked in another intake of air. "I swear I've been running all night."

"How the hell did you see?" Sydney asked as she swiped her mouth with the back of her hand.

"I had an illuminator. Emphasis on had. I lost the stupid thing." Sitting back on her haunches, Alea glanced nervously around. "We can't stay here long."

  "Where's Bligh?"

"Likely staked to the ground by now." Alea rose to her feet and glanced nervously around.

"What?" Sydney stood. "By her mates?"

"Ancient Tertian tradition during the hunt." Alea chuckled. "Mate and stake, that's what I call it, anyway."

  "So they caught her?"

"Oh probably, the Sh'em always do."

"Isn't that dangerous?" Sydney frowned. "Staking her to the ground, that is. What if a wild animal finds her?"

"I'm really not sure. I'll have to let you know if my Sh'em do the same to me." Alea sniffed the air.

Sydney also sniffed the air for her own mates surprised at her own disappointment when she couldn't detect their scents. Her craving for that alluring fragrance was becoming a delectably irresistible obsession exciting her, coaxing that mellow ache that simmered low in her core to blossom fully to life. She pushed the thought of it aside.

"Are your Sh'em around?" Sydney asked.

"Yes close, but listen, I have something to tell y…oh shit." Alea held up two hands. "Rjant, wait. I need to tell you something."

Sydney spun. A naked Rjant was stalking directly toward them, but Sydney had no plans of waiting around to find out if being incarcerated again was about to become her fate. She bolted across the stream.

"Tren!" She heard Alea yell. "I have something to tell you!"

Sydney glanced back and saw that Rjant and Tren were making quick work of stripping off Alea's clothing. She then sprinted, putting distance between herself and the Tertani soldiers.

A grin creased her lips. They would be too occupied with their own She'mana to chase after her. Alea wasn't kidding when she told her that the rituals were a compelling urge and little else could overpower it. At least Alea wasn't upset. Her fellow earthling wasn't upset in the least. In fact she was laughing.

  Chapter Twenty

"Get off of my fucking chest." Calem lay flat on his back, gritting out his words, his lungs compressing under the weight of Arjim's bare foot. His hands were clasping his brethren's other foot to keep it from crushing down on the side of his head.

"I think not, brethren." Arjim didn't bother looking down. Instead he scanned the area around him, feeling quite smug. "I can see better from the increase in height."

Calem snarled. His weapon was just a hair's distance away, and if he could just reach the starblasted thing, he'd split the arrogant bastard in half.

It is reprehensible to threaten my naagis, cousin.

Get out of my fucking head asswipe!

Arjim looked downward and frowned. When word was received that their Tina had escaped, that she was fleeing, only briefly had the discord between them ceased as they stampeded from the building. The treaty between them was temporary, their Tertani male drive to dominate overpowering reason once again. If they hadn't been trying to thrash the blazing hades out of each other as they chased their Tina through the forest they would've capture her by now. Now the Allegiance might find her instead. They should've snatched her before she even had the chance to run, and yet knowing she was fleeing, excited them, their libidos on fire, hungry once again for the hunt.

"Solitude of mind would be preferable." Arjim angled his head to inspect the scabbing on his shoulder and the coagulated wound on forearm inflicted by Calem earlier. He stepped to the ground giving Calem the freedom to stand, and when he did Calem snatched up his weapon as he sprang to his feet. They faced each other menacingly, nearly nose to nose, talon arcs raised, ready to strike.

"As piss-poor fate would have it." Calem touched the bruised area high on his cheek where Arjim had delivered a hefty blow. "I am annoyingly cursed with you for the rest of eternity. Solitude is a futile hope."

Arjim licked his lower lip, swollen from Calem's cuffing. Both were beginning to appear quite battered. "At least you have the benefit of my exceptional wisdom to keep you company. I on the other hand am doomed to suffer from the never ending abyss echoing inside of your skull."

Calem narrowed threatening eyes at Arjim. They both sneered, bearing their teeth like two sexually frustrated stags in competitive heat, rivaling for the same female…and they were. Only exhaustion from their persistent pounding on each other had brought them to a standstill leaving them marginally cogent. Still, the drive for dominance continued to loom beneath, their demeanor capable of becoming explosive again at any moment.

Ceding to Arjim's latest dig, Calem lowered his weapon. "The Commanders will have our hides if we mate with her." He scanned the forest around them his patience growing thin, knowing that Sydney would soon be bound to them.

"I am fully prepared for the consequences." Arjim growled, his mind bending, pushing deeper into his brethren link, seeking the blending that would bring their separate psyches to a state of like in mind. Aside from that we've already attempted to refrain and you saw the results of that.

The mental invasion caused Calem to jolt and his grip on his talon tightened. Outwardly he remained composed, but inwardly he battled the conflict. Without their woman between them, the mental merging would be impossible to acquire, and yet he like Arjim craved it.

"Agreed," Calem finally returned. "I am done allowing the Allegiance to interfere with our sacred dictates, with our dignity, any longer."

"With our hearts." Arjim rasped out, uncaring that the consequences for their insubordination would be severe, but they'd had enough. It was time to protect their woman at all costs, even if the cost was with their lives.

Both closed their eyes, their arousal surging, their cocks growing stiff as their minds intercepted the channeling of the of their Prowlers, Tren and Rjant, Larimon and Bjead, who were now succumbing to the sexual charms of their She'manas. Where normally the women would hamper the Triconjugal pack from capturing the Tina, Calem and Arjim were pleased that the Sh'em ot Alea and the Sh'em ot Bligh were now occupied by their females. It would buy them time, keep their beloved Sydney from the powers that sought to condemn her.

Fe isti'a cro udilit kea she' ste du, one of the four remaining Prowlers, an Esotarian warrior channeled to them. We trail your Tina.

Arjim and Calem opened their eyes and exchanged wily grins, their minds now alerting to the mental signals of the four Cu'cjani who were now training their Tina's movement directly toward them.

"It is time to claim our woman, brethren." Calem focused on the forest.

Arjim did the same. They stalked toward the trees, Arjim leaning against one, and Calem against the next one over. The carnal need to prowl and mate infused their conscious awareness before submerging into inherent thoughts. They grinned wider, lecher
ously as lust surged within them, wild and predatory. They could taste her, smell her, and soon they would be touching her, kissing and licking her, thrusting, and stroking inside of her, loving her…finally…their woman now coming towards them ... ass first.

"We have kept you close to our hearts, She'ami," Arjim's hand slid beneath the sarong she wore to cup her bare bottom.

"Oh snap." Sydney stiffened and then gulped.

She turned her head, her eyes growing wider as she stared in surprise at Arjim who smiled with amorous delight while he caressed her. She'd been backing away from the Prowlers who had been dauntingly stalking closer to her, never touching her yet preventing her from taking any path except the one they'd kept open for her, the path that had her apparently retreating directly into Calem's and Arjim's arms.

"Our beautiful woman, despite believing your spirit had been stolen from us, my brethren and I have always remained bound to each other," Calem said and Sydney turned to study him. He paused to look at his cousin before turning his attention back to her. "And to you."

Unexpected tears filled her eyes as he sauntered closer, reaching, placing his hands on her shoulders and turning her to face him. The amorous fervor on his handsome face was intense, and the loving passion in his shimmering eyes as he gazed at her was more brilliant than she could have ever imagined.

Arjim lifted his hand to touch her face, the slight touch of fingers quivered almost nervously along her cheek, whispering across her flesh, and causing her to shudder. She inhaled sharply drawing in their scents, their deliciously exotic scent, filling her lungs, consuming her senses as though the essence was vital to her survival. A potent wave of lust charged through her gripping every nerve along the way.

Calem moved nearer to her, and took her hand between both of his, their combined touching of her causing her desire for them to surge even further. Her pussy was instantly wet, her clit engorged and throbbing. Her heart pounded. Her blood heated. She craved them, ached for them beyond her own comprehension, and Sydney began to shake, intensely overwhelmed by the heartrending emotions seizing her. "I didn't even know." She gulped back a sob. "I didn't even know you were alive…were real or else I would've let you in."
