Romantically Challenged Page 25

by Sami Lukis

But hey, if my expectations are high, I’ll thank my parents for this one. After being set up on a cheeky little blind date, they’re still happily married more than fifty years later. It’s blatantly obvious to anyone who meets my folks that they were made for one another. To this day, they still hold hands, everywhere they go, whenever they’re close enough to touch. They share the kind of ‘til death do we part’ love that most of us would like to find.

  So here’s what I’ve decided.

After riding this crazy dating roller-coaster for more than three decades, I’m well aware that it can be daunting, dumbfounding, disappointing, demeaning, depressing and downright laughable. But I’ve also discovered along the way that dating can sometimes be exciting and inspiring and bloody good fun. And most importantly, full of promise, that I might just find the kind of love my folks have.

Hell, maybe it’s even time for me to finally throw caution to the wind and give online dating a go (despite my reservations, fears and overwhelming anxiety about the entire process).

I have no idea how many Mr Wrongs it will take to find my Mr Right, but I’m not ready to bow out just yet.

I’m also inspired by a couple of crazy kids named Gertrude and Alvin from Middletown, New York, who were ninety-eight and ninety-four years of age when they got hitched, just as I finished writing this book. See? It is possible to find love, at any age.

I hope my Mr Right is a kind, decent, honest man who respects me and loves me, despite my flaws. Someone who makes me smile. And makes an effort. And has my back. I hope he loves to travel as much as I do (and if he wears an avalanche pack, well, that would be an absolute bonus).

I love the idea of being with someone who knows the exact spot where I like my arm tickled (inside bicep) and exactly how I take my coffee (strong, soy capp). And I would really like to be with a man who doesn’t care that I lick the chocolate off the inside of my takeaway cappuccino lid. In public. In broad daylight. I am well aware that licking anything in public is not appropriate behaviour, but I just can’t help myself. My Mr Happily Ever After will know that about me, and he’ll love me anyway.

But until I find that guy, I’ll be quite content to remain – happily, hopelessly and hilariously – romantically challenged.
