The Cruelest Cut Page 36

by Rick Reed

Jack looked around and thought that in a couple of months the park would be covered in snow, the ponds would be iced over, the green grass and foliage would be gone, the squirrels would be hunting for food, and he suddenly realized just how negative he had become. “I really do need a shrink,” he said out loud, not caring if the other squirrels heard him.

“And here I am,” came a friendly voice from behind him. Apparently the shrink had arrived.

Jack looked up and was shocked to see the stunning woman who stood there. He’d expected a female Sigmund Freud, beard and all, but this young lady was gorgeous. As tall as Jack, with strawberry-blond hair worn down to her shoulders, she had the figure and muscle tone of an Olympic skater. Thank you, God! he said mentally, and then offered her a seat on the bench beside him. And for the next hour he began to enjoy the green of the grass, the buzz of bumblebees on the purple clover, and even the playful squirrels that skittered around in search of goodies. Maybe it wasn’t so bad being a squirrel.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I would like to give special thanks to my editor, Michaela Hamilton, of Kensington Books, for her guidance, confidence, and unending patience with me. If I could give advice to new writers it would be to “listen to your editor.”

I would also like to thank all the staff at Kensington Books who have worked so hard. Without them my book would still be on my hard drive.

For my special friends at The Church Street Coffee House in New Harmony, Indiana; Laura Hudgins and her son Elliot; Molly and Mickey Grimm and their son Grafton; and all the rest of you New Harmony town characters, a big thank-you for your unending support and for allowing me to spend many pleasurable hours in your company.

I would also like to thank Linda Cutteridge, Deborah Wozniak, Buffy Baker, and Gillian Robertson for reading and proofing this story when it was still in its infancy.

  Don’t miss Rick Reed’s next page-turning thriller

  featuring Detective Jack Murphy…

  coming from Pinnacle in 2011.
