She walked away, head down.
Teresa said to Clint, “I was thinkin’ of a Bible verse, but I guess that’s as good as any.”
“It was fine,” he said.
They walked back to the house, where Eclipse was waiting, saddled. Loretta was already standing on the porch. Teresa joined her.
Clint had spent the morning loading the dead bodies onto the buckboard, taking them as far from the house as he could and finding a gulley that could double as a mass grave. It was the best he could do and all they deserved. The men who had been wounded had managed to drag themselves away, and Pierce—the man tied up in the barn—had either gotten loose, or was let lose, because he was gone, as well.
Belinda had survived the night, but by the time Clint had returned from the mass grave, she was dead. He immediately went out and dug her grave.
“Do you have to leave?” Teresa asked him.
“It’s time.”
“Where will you go?” Loretta asked.
“I’ll start with Silver City, let the law there know what happened to Corazon.”
“Maybe some of the people will come back,” Loretta said.
“Maybe,” Clint agreed. “If they do, maybe you should make some friends.”
“We’ll see,” Loretta said.
Teresa came down off the porch again and kissed Clint, then rejoined her sister.
Clint mounted Eclipse.
“Take care of each other,” he said.
“Take care of yourself,” Loretta said.
“I always do,” the Gunsmith said and rode away.
