“As I love you. So dearly.” Tears filled her eyes again and threatened to flow down her cheeks. “But, please, understand, Connor, I cannot take the boy away from his blood grandparents.” She took his face between her hands. “A journey to Ireland, often, would be right and proper, but, for them to never see Robbie again would be pure malice.”
“I’ll tell you the rest. Egan and I went before a magistrate in Albany, with all the information Egan brought with him, the adoption papers, the will and the proof the Dewitts swindled you and Robbie of money rightfully yours and his.”
Sinead shook her head. “Nae, they would never do such a…”
“They did. ‘Tis not the money, Sinead. I’m wealthy in my own right. I can easily care for you and Rob. But listen and listen carefully. The Dewitts did cheat the laddie and are still doing it. Ludwig is in terrible debt, due to gambling.”
Sinead pushed herself from the railing and stood as tall as she could. She faced Connor, her bearing proud and resolute. “All I want is Robbie to be cared for. I don’t want their damned money.”
Connor cupped her face in his hands again. “The money is yours. Robert left it all to his wife, which is what you were when he died.”
Sinead snaked her arms around Connor’s chest and laid her head against it. “What would make my life complete is to be with you and Robbie, together, forever. It’s all I want. I don’t want to lose you to Ireland or any other place in this world. I’m in love with you, Connor. The idea of living without you is more than I can bear…”
Sobs wrenched her body. This time she trembled in fear and privation rather than in passion. “What am I to do?”
Connor picked her up in his arms and cradled her. “This is what we will do. We’ll pay off all of Ludwig’s debts and…”
Sinead looked up at him and snaked her arms around his neck. “You’d do that?”
Connor kissed her lips in a pledge. “Aye, and more.” He turned to toward the fields. “Look out there, lass. See the land spread out in front of you?”
Tears glistened on her face. She scanned the rolling hills, the forest areas, the barn and the paddocks. “Connor, ‘tis lovely here. You’ve made a home here, a home to be cherished.”
“And ‘tis ours. We’ll live here, bring up Rob and raise horses. How’s that for a life plan?”
Sinead squealed, “Then you’ll stay? Here? With us? In America?”
“Aye, lassie. We’ll work things out together. ‘Tis my home now. Here in Saratoga.”
With her arms around his neck, Sinead kissed his face all over, making sure not to miss his ears. Her mobile lips went from his ear, to the tip of his nose, and landed on full lips. Their kiss grew deeper. Their dueling tongues met. Connor groaned. He slid her down the length of his body. Sinead gasped. She strained against him.
They took a breath. Connor murmured in her ear, “I think we’ll be a bit late for the races today.”
He swung her up into his arms and rushed into the house.

About the author of Saratoga Summer
Throughout her several careers, Dorice Nelson, a former Albany, New York resident, never dreamed she’d write a novel. After an early retirement and a move to the mountains of upstate New York, where she lives with her attorney husband (also an author), a happy-go-lucky mixed breed dog and two personality-plus cats, she entered the world of writing with both feet. She freely admits it’s the most difficult yet satisfying career of her life.
Dorice sold her very first novel, THE GUNN OF KILLEARNAN, a historic and romantic adventure, set in 1650 Scotland during the time of the War of the Covenant. Along with excellent reviews, the novel has received the Scribe’s World Reviewer’s Choice Award and won the Love Romances Best of 2001 Award in two categories, Best Historical Romance and Best e-Romance! The novel is also a finalist in the Ohio Valley RW chapter’s Notable New Author of 2001 Award contest, the placements to be disclosed in April 2002 and the Virginia RWA Holt Medallion to be disclosed June 22nd.
UNLAWFUL, another historic and romantic adventure set in Irish medieval times when the Viking raids were numerous, came out in January to great reviews, great sales and the Word Weaving Award of Excellence. Both books are with NovelBooks, Incorporated, a small press located in Massachusetts.
1863 SARATOGA SUMMER is her August release. The hero, an Irish horseman, leaves Ireland, arrives in New York City during the Civil War conscription riots and flees to Saratoga Springs in time for the first legal thoroughbred racing season in New York State.
