Duke: A Paranormal Scifi Alien Romance: Albaterra Mates Book 2 Page 12

by Ashley L. Hunt

“Sergeant Morgan is here to see you,” she announced without preamble.

I swiveled my head to gape at her. “What? Why?”

“I don’t know,” she answered unhappily. “I asked, but he wouldn’t tell me. He just said it’s important.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me. I just got in,” I snapped.

Madeleine shrank back, and I immediately regretted my reaction. It wasn’t her fault that the Sergeant wanted to see me, and it definitely wasn’t her fault that I really didn’t want to see him.

“Is he in uniform, at least?” I asked, my tone softer.

  “Yes,” she murmured nervously.

“Well, there’s that,” I muttered to myself.

She opted not to reply. The fear on her face was almost laughable to me, not because she looked comical but because Madeleine and I were only a few short years apart in age. It was strange enough to be just four years older than my assistant, but for her to be so intimidated by my authority felt nothing short of outrageous.

“Send him in,” I said with a resigned sigh. She nodded and turned, but, before she could exit, I called to her, “Thank you, Madeleine.”

“You’re welcome,” she replied, her face relaxing slightly as she smiled at me over her shoulder.

Once the door closed behind her, I sank into my wheeled desk chair and covered my face with my hands. Of all days for Sergeant Morgan to make an appearance this week, today was probably the worst. I was way behind on paperwork, my office looked like a paper bomb had gone off, and, as the cherry on the sundae, I’d had the dream again last night.

I’d felt the flames on my skin, smelled the acrid stench of burn around me. The panic had quickened my heart and knotted my stomach, and then the grief of seeing Becky’s charred corpse had rendered me broken. Sweat had drenched every inch of my skin and soaked the sheets I slept in. Once again, I’d lived the nightmare.

Images from the dream flashed before my closed eyes, and I quickly snapped them open just in time to see a very tall, very fit man through my fingers as he stepped into my office.

Sergeant Rodney P. Morgan was, by all accounts, a local celebrity. When the astronauts had returned from their mission and revealed their encounters with alien life, he’d been among the first to assemble defense squads in the New York area. He’d worked closely with all branches of the military, as well as with NASA, to choose soldiers who would be best suited to fight against extraterrestrials—whether it be for their brute strength, tactical skills, knowledge of advanced technology, or even relative criminal history. What had resulted was a host of platoons so diverse and deadly that they’d collectively earned a fitting nickname: “Alien Assassins”, or “Alias” for short.

“Good morning, Roxanne,” Morgan said in a silken purr as he clicked the door closed behind him.

I tried not to grimace at his tone while I got to my feet and rounded my desk with my hand extended to greet him. “Sergeant.”

He took my hand and shook it, his harsh gray eyes skimming slowly down the length of my body. I instantly regretted choosing to wear the form-fitting pencil skirt and simple yet flattering white blouse. “I see you’re taking your new position seriously,” he commented. I could practically hear the saliva gathering in his mouth.

“Yes, I am,” I replied, a bite to my words. Then, pointedly, I added, “There’s quite a bit to do.”

Our hands were no longer shaking, but he still gripped mine as though he was unwilling to let it go. I wrenched my fingers free and turned to go back to my chair. As I slipped onto it, I motioned to one of the two seats opposite my desk. Morgan ran a hand through his mop of dirty-blonde hair and sat. His eyes still had a greedy, hungry look about them.

“You know, Roxanne, I never did properly congratulate you on becoming the new Ambassador of Alien Relations. How about you and I—”

“Why have you come to see me, Sergeant?” I interrupted, my temper beginning to flare. While many considered Morgan to be an attractive catch with his impressive rank and smoldering gaze, his repeated sexual advances toward me made me think of him as nothing less than a slimeball, and my tolerance for him ran very thin. “And, since you mentioned it, I’d prefer you to address me as Ms. Rigby, since I am the new Ambassador of Alien Relations and all.”

Morgan’s gaze hardened for the briefest of seconds, and then the left corner of his mouth turned up in a smirk. “Very well, Ms. Rigby,” he conceded with aggravating sweetness. Leaning forward to prop his elbows on his knees, he suddenly became intense. “I’m here because it’s time to put you to the test. We’re going to see what our new Ambassador is made of.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.

He leaned forward a little more until his rear was nearly falling off the seat, and his eyes glittered with excitement. “We’ve got the leader.”

  Kataline

Night has fallen as I stand in the vast garden of antique roses my father had made for my sister and me to enjoy. I’m not willing to go back inside just yet though as I think about my future and how it no longer will be here on Earth.

The pale pink roses are my absolute favorite of the various colors which surround me. Reds, oranges, and even a vine of the rare blue tiny roses captivate me. Though not enough to keep my mind from wandering away from me to my impending fate.

The stars twinkle over my head and the news my father, the Senator, has just given me tells me somewhere up amongst them is the man who is to be my husband. Since Earth is trying desperately to stay out of a war with the Euthenia Nebula, I have been informed it’s my great honor to be the first Earthling to be awarded as a bride to the hierarchy who rules the distant planet.

Only thing is I don’t see it as an honor. I see it for what it is. I am a pawn in this game the men who run Earth call expansion. The need to expand constantly our reach as Earthlings is a thing the handful of men who rule the entire Earth have foremost on their minds.

My father made sure the blood which flows through my veins is as pure as any Earthling’s can be. A bit of a science project my older sister and I are. Only she was smart and lost her innocence to a common man and by doing so, she took herself out of the supposedly honorable position as a pure bride to be offered or awarded to the alien races.

To ensure my father had, at least, one viable prodigy he could use in aiding his addiction to rule over as many planets as possible, I have been kept locked up.

Oh, my prison has been a place of grandeur and great beauty. Large stone walls fence in a hundred acres of gardens, sports courts, a vast swimming pool and even a labyrinth of tall bushes my sister and I nearly got lost in a few times.

They call what I now live in alone with my father, a mansion. I don’t know how people can live in anything smaller than what I live in. We have a private theater and at times, actors come to do private plays for my family.

The treatment I’ve received in this protected state has been good. I have never been treated with
out respect and honor. I also have never been able to make my own decisions or leave the estate.

Due to my special lineage, I’m too perfect not to be used for the supposed good of our planet and our species. My father often tells me how the surrogate who carried me died as she gave birth to me, but told him she was not dying in vain. She promised him I would help to make Earth the superpower he dreamt it would be one day.

My body carries the DNA of fifteen people. Some are prizewinning scientists, some are great athletes, and a couple of them are scholarly geniuses. Then there were two, a man and a woman, who were simply added because of their great beauty.

When I look in the mirror I don’t see all of that. I see a young woman who has been kept much like a diamond in a box, waiting for someone to open it and see it sparkle and shine. But an alien is not who I wanted to open it.

I love this planet and have no desire to even visit another, much less rule it. The man I’m being awarded to is a prince. The Prince of Euthenia, Kerr, is who will become my husband in the matter of one week.

It was a thing I always supposed might happen to me. Somehow I managed to keep the fact I would most likely be awarded to a man and made to marry him without ever knowing him out of my brain all these years.

My new husband’s face I will see for the first time when my father walks me down the aisle to give me to him. After the reception, I am expected to let the stranger take my innocence. I am expected to be submissive to him, his wants, and his needs.

Euthenia is a planet ruled by men. Much the same as Earth, only on Earth we all pretend we have the same rights. It’s not that way on Euthenia. As a princess and one-day queen, my father has told me I will be honored and respected more so than other females on the planet. He tells me my life there will be fantastic and I’m so lucky.

Then why do I not feel lucky?

I put up a fight about being given to the alien man. My sister may be out, but there are other women who have been bred similar to me and they are viable options. I begged my father and then when that didn’t work I threatened him with the typical, I’ll kill myself, antics, but nothing worked.

He told me it was a done deal and I must accept my fate. He also warned me about how the men of Euthenia deal with unreasonable females. Let’s just say, I don’t want to be at the stinging end of anyone’s strap. Especially a man built the way most Euthenian’s are.

I have no idea what Kerr will be built like, but the pictures I’ve seen of other males from that planet have shown me they are massive men. Tall in stature, broad shoulders, thick waists, and thick legs. Every muscle on their bodies are defined and large.

A shiver runs through me as I think about the sheer strength my new husband might have. I do hope he’s a gentle giant. A man who will treat me with some semblance of love. Eventually anyway.

Many books I’ve read while trapped in this paradise my father has made for us. Romance novels fill the shelves of the large library we have here. To be a heroine who finds a hero to love and care for and be loved and cared for has always been my dream.

My dream hero was no alien, though. It seems my father and the other men who rule this world have decided my fate is not going to be one I’ve dreamt of. And I can accept that if they can accept the fact I will not be going out of my way to make sure they get the future they think they’re going to get by marrying me off to an alien.

I really have no idea why they gave me the genes of such strong people if they wanted me to shut up and sit back and do as I’m told without any arguments what-so-ever. They really are idiots.

The rulers of this world have made sure to keep the women made to be awarded to the alien races apart. I’m pretty sure if we were all together we might just overthrow the handful of old men who think they know best for our race.

My education has been vast. I’ve been told all of the females like me have also been equally as educated. In my opinion, it’s high time the females took over running this planet. Hence, the reason we are kept separate and are now being given to people who live on other planets.

Perhaps the old men thought we’d be no threat and seeing as we would be, if let out on the planet, they saw fit to send us all away, keeping Earth for themselves.

Earth has overtaken thirteen planets in the last one hundred years. In the last ten years, The Euthenia Nebula opened its doors for Earth to send some of its residents to populate the desolate areas of their planet. They call themselves settlers.

Earthlings are well respected as people who will go through many hardships to make a place inhabitable. Many other planets invited us in and we tend to creep in and overtake the entire planet before they realize we’ve done it.

Euthenia wants us to stop moving into their cities. They don’t mind us doing a little prospecting and trying to make something from nothing, which we are excellent at. They do however expect us to respect their borders, a thing we aren’t known for doing.

In my opinion, it’s the Euthenian’s own fault for inviting us in. But they don’t see it that way and have been threatening us with annihilation here of late. Thus the offering of a bride to the next in line in the hierarchy. A bride who has been touted as perfection.

Well, like any human, I am far from perfect. I’m sure the pedestal my leaders have put me on my soon to be husband will see is a farce and I am but a mortal woman with faults and blemishes.

I am sure to displease him with my lack of physical, sexual knowledge. That will knock me down a notch in his eyes I have no doubt. My mind is sharp and so is my tongue. A thing he will see as unattractive, I am sure.

Since it’s impossible for me to live up to what has been said about me, my marriage is sure to be one of disappointment and not like the love stories I’ve read so many of.

Why does this have to be my fate?

The Euthenia Nebula is not quite like Earth. There are two suns. One larger than the other. Three moons in various lunar stages are always visible on the vast sky.

The planet is small, though. Only a third of the size of Earth. But the people who inhabit the planet have adapted to their area and only have two children per each couple. The pregnancies there take a whole year before the child is born. Through no birth control either, it’s just how their bodies have adjusted to the planet.

It’s quite amazing and apparently the way we humans can reproduce so quickly is a real problem for that planet. They’re accusing us of populating like rabbits, taking up too much of the space afforded us already.

It makes me wonder how they will take my impact on the royal family. I will be the first Earthling to have intercourse with a Euthenian. Another thing my planet is calling wonderful and I see in another opposite way.

With no idea of how many children I will have or if I will have any is a mystery. A complete mystery and I am about logic and science and so hate mystery.

There may be something wrong in the royal genes as my prince’s brother died shortly after birth, leaving him an only child. A rare thing on that planet

A science project until my end, I suppose is my fate. My only saving grace is that I may find my husband easy on the eyes, as the few pictures I’ve seen of the men from that planet have shown me they all are terribly handsome.

Could be a gorgeous man might help me to accept the fate which is mine. It certainly couldn’t hurt.

The Royal Euthenian Armada my family and guards travel to Earth in is vast. Out the window of the courtroom, a line of black, shiny crafts flies alongside the main one. The one I and my father ride in.

Thirteen ships fly on each side of us, bringing the entire royal family, all the way to the last duke and lord and the majority of our guards to witness this historic wedding. The capital was nearly emptied with our departure.

A handful of guards were left behind to watch over the capital city and the palace. It seems everyone wants to be on Earth to see what is supposed to be a spectacular event.

  All the ente
rtainment and what I’m sure will be over the top displays of all Earth has to offer will most likely be lost on me once I have my hands on my beautiful new bride. She is all my eyes will most likely see once she’s mine.

My father, the king, sits on an overstuffed seat, covered in the leather the Earthling’s we allow to live in the desolate areas of our planet, The Euthenia Nebula, make out of the creatures’ hides they call bovines they brought with them. The meat is quite horrid, though, and it’s hard to know how they can ingest such a thing.

A platter of crunchy, boiled red beetles, served in a mineral glaze made of the best soil our planet has to offer is on the table as the first course of our third meal of each twenty-eight-hour day. I pop one into my mouth and delight in the crunchy outside and oozing center.

“Father, are you hungry?” I ask.

His light blue eyes gaze out the window as the blue planet of Earth hangs in the bottom of the thick glass pane. He sighs. “To eat as we are only hours from our destination after hours upon hours of travel is not a thing which interests me, son.” His gaze turns to me. “Tell me how it is. Tell me how you’re not doubling over with spasms of nerves in your stomach. You are to marry an Earthling. One of the most despised creatures in existence.”

“It is for our planet, Father. I will be king once you pass from this realm to the next. It’s a task I hold with the highest regards. I intend to unite our planet with Earth and any other planets which seek the peace and unequivocal balance which will come from galaxies who partner for the better of all.” My eyes move to look at the planet which is home to my awarded female.
