Canadian Car and Foundry manufactured Hawker Hurricanes between 1938 and 1943. Number 1 Squadron RCAF in the Battle of Britain used Hurricanes to play a decisive role in the Battle of Britain and went on to fly on more fronts than any other British fighter.

The 1st Canadian Division mobilized before the formal declaration of war on September 1, 1939. They crossed the Atlantic in December 1939. Several announcers on the English language propaganda radio program Germany Calling gave out false reports of the convoy. Dismissed by many, as comical figures they all went by the nickname Lord Haw-Haw.

Leipzig Barracks on Ewshott Common, now demolished, was originally built for the Royal Field Artillery. The division trained in England for three years before transferring to the Mediterranean to take part in the Invasion of Sicily in July 1943.

The bombing of London started on Saturday, September 7th when 967 German and Italian fighters and bombers attacked at 5 p.m. The main objective was the densely populated East End, Beckton Gas Works, and Woolwich Arsenal. Blitzkrieg was the term used to describe the German armored punch that was fast and furious and totally confounded the enemy. It was a great way to attack either by air or land, but a poor way to defend.

After a former Asahi baseball star becomes her new teacher, baseball fever hits town. Then the government announces that they must move once again. But they can’t think of relocating with a new baby coming, even with the offer of free passage to Japan. Michiko pretends to be her mother and writes to get a job for her father on a farm in Ontario. When he is accepted, they again pack their belongings and head to a new life in Ontario.
