She sat back down, while everyone fussed over the gift. She was happy it was a hit and Tremaine seemed to genuinely appreciate it. She had wanted to get something bigger, but Renee’s advice had been correct. It would have been awkward to give him a large gift in such an intimate setting.
“Girl, small gift my behind!” Julissa erupted. “That’s a $300 pen. I just Googled it.”
“Oh my.” His mother gasped and for a moment Ayda worried that the moment had been ruined.
“Well, well...that’s one hell of a pen. Probably turns blank paper into a check with just a signature.” His father added, which made everyone laugh.
“And I’m giving you an official invitation to my law school graduation in three years, Ayda. I want another small gift too.” Julissa joked, which made the laughter grow louder.
“Thank you, baby.” Tremaine kissed her and squeezed her arm. “And I’m gonna really thank you, later.” He whispered in her ear then went back to gushing over his gift.
Ayda cast an affectionate glance at him while he laughed with his family. It warmed her heart to see him like this, no suit, and no airs. He was just being Tremaine. His family had also been been so gracious and hospitable to her today, so much so that Ayda felt like she fit in with them, unlike how she felt with her own family. Already, Tremaine had helped her regain so much of what she had lost over the years, which made her excited about what the future had in store for them. It was true that he was not the strapping young millionaire that her family would have preferred for her, but he had restored her confidence, made her feel beautiful, and encouraged her to be herself. All that Tremaine had given her was priceless and could never be matched by money.
All of her life, everyone had tried to convince her that she was fortunate because of what she had, and for a long while, she believed it. Today, she had to admit that nothing had ever felt as good as what she felt right now, while she sat with Tremaine and his family. Now, she felt like she had it all.
Now, she truly felt fortunate.
