Epilogue
Christophe stopped at the metal detectors in the lobby, handing over his wallet and weapon before stepping through. The security guard checked his ID and waved him through, and Christophe continued to the elevators.
He exited at the top of the building on the tenth floor, nodded at the receptionist, and made his way to a conference room at the end of a long hall. Nico leaned against a credenza with a drink in his hand. Christophe had become used to seeing him in a suit again, and it was hard to believe six months earlier he’d been living on a beach in Thailand with Angel and Stella instead of occupying a penthouse on Fifth Avenue.
Farrell and Luca stood nearby, heads bent to some kind of report. They looked up as Christophe entered the room.
“Sorry I’m late,” Christophe said. “Plane got diverted over JFK.”
“No problem,” Nico said. “Want a drink?”
“No, thank you,” Christophe said.
“Then let’s get started,” Nico said, taking a seat at one end of the conference table.
Luca sat to his right, Farrell to his left. Christophe chose the seat next to Farrell.
Nico reached for the report in front of him. “This calls to order the first official meeting of the new Syndicate.”
Christophe let his eyes travel around the table, trying to mark the twists of fate that had brought him to this place. To these people. It was impossible to say. Each seemingly wrong turn had eventually led him to the right one. Without any one of them, who knew where he’d be?
