R. Jenkins, Battle of Peach Tree Creek, 340–41, argues that Gates’s Brigade supported Reynolds’s attack. He bases this on some accounts that give a relatively high casualty rate for the brigade. But other accounts offer low estimates of brigade casualties, and it is difficult to see how Gates could have supported Reynolds when Ector’s Brigade was positioned next to Reynolds, not Gates. R. Jenkins, Battle Rages Higher, 231–32, argues that Ector supported Reynolds, but I see no evidence to suggest this scenario. See also Bevier, History of the First and Second Missouri, 240.
