Lost Hours

Page 14

by Lorena Franco

The stool beside mine is empty.

I look around for Paul, but he´s not there. There´s only the curious, mocking looks being directed at me by a bunch of total strangers. They are staring at me, the nutcase that has been talking to herself for quite a while. Those stares harass me, question me, stalk me.

I pay the tab and leave the pub, embarrassed, at half past nine. That´s all there´s to it; keep the hours in check. Keep the monster hidden.

The moment I stick the key into the lock of the building where I live, a strong draft produces a sharp chill on my back. As I turn, I see two shadows in the darkness across the street.

They are amongst the trees, and though I can´t see their faces, I know they are looking at me. One of the figures is taller and sturdier than the other… they slowly come into focus and I can see their faces. John Peck and Paul Tischmann, smiling at me. Their eyes radiate compassion and understanding, their peaceful expressions reassuring me, letting me know everything will be fine.

“I´ll be a good girl,” I promise. “I will behave myself.”

  They nod and disappear.

As I walk into my small London flat, I feel a change has taken place. The monster that has been with me all these years has evaporated, together with all my ghosts. The lost hours vanish for the first time in a long time, and I can fall asleep without nightmares tormenting my sick mind. I wonder if I deserve the opportunity I´ve been given.

“He who does not oppose evil,

  commands it to be done.”
