It was Romeo and Juliet that started my literary journey when I was fourteen years old, studying those pages for my SAT exams that year. That was the first play to capture my imagination and I distinctly remember being sat in class and getting a round of applause from everyone when our SAT scores were announced (mine were a little unexpected). I flushed bright red and was bumped into the top set the following year.
There were teachers along the way who said, “Sarah, you can write.” Their voices have reverberated around my head for years. I think I still remember all their names. I might not have written any of these novels without their haunting pleas. Even if the stories aren’t my own, I still find the writing experience an intensely personal thing. Sometimes the voices in your head tell the tales, other times the words are just a whisper of hope.
