Wilder stepped into the room with his arms wrapped tightly around Adrienne, and she was smiling with a secretive look and glow about her.

“You have a glow I haven’t seen lately,” Drayton said.

“It must be the heat,” Adrienne said.

“There’s no heat in here. It’s freezing outside,” Lycell said irritated.

Adrienne and Wilder looked as if they had just been married and come off a honeymoon. Wilder and Adrienne moved as one. He holding her hands as they walked to the table to sit and he pulled out the chair. Normally Drayton did that.

Looking up to Wilder she said, “I’m hungry.” Wilder rushed to the heated oven to fix her a plate topped with eggs, bacon, and toast. Lycell, Thorn, and Drayton stood watching at Wilder. They couldn’t believe the transformation. He came back with a plate full of Adrienne’s favorite food and set it in front of her.

Wilder and Adrienne looked at each other. “I’m glad you’re all here,” Wilder said.

“Tracker’s here, too. He’s in his room and Damon is sleeping,” Thorn said.

Adrienne glanced over to Thorn, “What’s wrong with your finger?”

“Not now, mother. What is it you and Uncle Wilder want to tell us?”

“We’re having pups. Babies,” Adrienne said her voice delighted. Lycell turned to her with a probing glance. His mouth opened in surprise. As if to question, when, where, and why.

Lycell rose in a huff. He walked passed Adrienne and Wilder and threw the paper down in front of Wilder.”

Wilder read it for a few minutes. “What’s this? Another headline. I thought I asked for some peace from this.”

“There’s more, Wilder,” Thorn said. Adrienne closed her eyes and took in a hard breath. “I’m going to get married?”

  “That’s wonderful,” Drayton said.

  “I’m marrying Zoey.”

“The woman Tracker abandon Robert’s young daughter for?” Wilder questioned then glaring at Thorn.

“Yes, that one. And.” He hesitated. “She’s pregnant.” The room became silent for a minute.

“That’s wonderful, Thorn,” Adrienne said smiling.

“What is so wonderful about that? Don’t you understand the implications? Her litter could be for Tracker,” Wilder said his voice changing from cheerful to displeasure.

“I’m well aware of the problems it could entail,” Adrienne said looking at Wilder. “Just look around you.” Thorn stood and walked to his mother.

“Thank you mother. I’m going to tell Zoey that she is welcomed into the Samsa family. I want to be married as soon as she’s well.”

“What do you mean well?” Wilder questioned.

“It’s a long story. Maybe we’ll tell you sometime, but for now, it’s not important.”

“Everything about this family concerns me,” he shouted. Adrienne glanced at Wilder and put her hand over his to calm him.

“You don’t want to start by welcoming our new family into the world this way. It will work itself out, Wilder,” Adrienne said.

Wilder sat thinking and looking at the newspaper headlines. He turned to Adrienne and said, “I hope so. But how?”

“You’ll figure something out, Wilder. You always do.” Maybe Adrienne was right, Wilder thought. Maybe it wasn’t as bad as he imagined. For now, he had a new family coming and more pups for his pack. His pack was growing stronger and wasn’t that what he always wanted?

Thorn left Wilder and his mother holding hands and whispering, and he walked out to the hospital, and entered the room where Zoey lay. Robert was seated in his office with his head down on the desk and he appeared to be sleeping.

A nurse had arrived and sat watching Zoey. She looked up at Thorn and smiled and said, “She’ll be fine, Mr. Samsa. She’s strong and her babies are strong. They’ll survive, too.” The nurse’s words were comforting. Thorn looked down at Zoey with a closed smile. He passed his hand over her forehead and sat in the beige leather recliner near Zoey and held her hand. He glanced up at the nurse. She had dark hair and dark eyes about forty. Her hair showed wisp of gray hair on the sides and a small patch in front.

He knew her kind because she was his kind—a werewolf like himself. She said to Thorn, “I hope you let me take care of your pups. I was never able to have any of my own.” He shook his head and said, “Yes. I want you to.” She looked down and continued reading her magazine.

She heard Thorn say, “I love you, Zoey and I’ll never leave you.” He leaned and kissed her hand and she opened her eyes and she called his name.

  “Thorn. You’re here.”

“Go back to sleep. Get well. I’ll be here when you wake.”
