The only thing I was taking on the plane with me was my purse. Yesterday while Romero was out with his wife, I had Emmanuel and Miguel take me to mail a lot of my clothes, shoes, and bags to Chicago. A girl had to have her shoes and bags. Hell, I was not able to drop a hundred and fifty racks on a Birkin, so I had to ship them. Of course, Miguel and Emmanuel had to know what was in them, and I told them that it was some things for Olena, Kam, and Mayhem’s little cousin, Rubee. I hated lying to them because they had been nothing but nice to me since I’d been here, but at the end of the day, their loyalty was to Romero, and I couldn’t trust them to keep my secret. I hadn’t even told Olena that I was moving back. I just told her that I’d be home for my birthday. I’d tell her when I got there that I’d be home for good this time, and I knew that she was going to be happy.
I pulled the letter that I had written out of the dresser and placed it on the desk. I wrote it the other day and hid it so he wouldn’t find it beforehand. I couldn’t write it today or last night because I wasn’t really calm or in the right headspace. I took a seat to read over what I wrote.
Romero Santiago,
When we met, I was just an eighteen-year-old girl, lost, confused, and didn’t know my place in the world. I couldn’t believe my confusion led me to a sugar baby website, but it did. I never thought I would meet someone as nice as you on the website. You have changed my life in more ways than one, and I am forever grateful for you. I think my time as your sugar baby/mistress has come to end. I’ll be thirty very soon, and I want different things, things that I didn’t want when I was eighteen. At thirty, I want kids, a marriage, to be flaunted like the beautiful girl that I know I am. You can’t give me that, Romero, and it would be wrong of me to ask that of you. So, today, I resign, effective immediately.
Tai Tai.
I scooted back from the desk, stood up, and sighed. I could have told him that face to face, but I know Romero. He would have given me that puppy dog look that he normally gave me, and I would have given in and took back the resignation. I took one last look around the room before I picked up my purse and headed outside. Angel and Flash were waiting for me as usual at the door, and I instantly burst into a fit of tears because in the midst of all this planning, I didn’t think about them. I had fell in love with them, and they were the best dogs that anyone could ever ask for. They knew I was sad, so they kept trying to jump on me and lick me. I had to stop them because I didn’t want to be on a plane for twenty-five hours smelling like a dog. They are well groomed, but dogs still smelled like dogs.
After I finished hugging them, I started up my walkway. Once I got a few feet away from my house, my phone started vibrating in my pocket. I pulled it out, and it was Romero. Gasping, I held the phone to my chest before pulling it away again. We hadn’t really talked since that day he took me shopping for my birthday dress because I wasn’t really feeling him, and he knew better than to push the issue with me.
If I don’t answer, he’ll think that something is wrong and come home, I thought to myself.
“H-h-hello,” I answered the phone, looking around as if I was being watched.
“Hey. I have a short break, Tai Tai. Can we talk for a moment?” he asked me.
“Yeah, sure,” I said.
“It sounds windy. Are you outside?” he asked me.
“Yeah, I am. Playing with the dogs.”
“Oh yeah. I see. You love them so much. They make you so happy. Taiwan, you know I love seeing you happy, right?” he said.
“Yeah, I know that, Romero. Where is that coming from?” I asked him.
“Taiwan, tonight, I want you to wear something nice, because I am introducing you to my family as the love of my life. My sons, my wife, my father, and my brothers will be there,” he said.
A huge lump formed in my throat, and I could barely swallow it. “Romero, I think you and I are moving into two different di—”
“Don’t say that, Taiwan.”
“I want to get married, and I want to have kids. You can’t give me any of that, Romero,” I spoke evenly. “I think our time has come to an—”
“No, it hasn’t, Taiwan. You haven’t let me finish what I was about to say. I’m getting a reversal, and six weeks later, I’ll be able to give you some kids. The reason why I’m inviting you to dinner is because I’m getting ready to announce my divorce from Essie and my engagement to you. Tai Tai, I can’t live without you, and I won’t. No matter what. You are more than just some ass to me. I’m in love with you,” he admitted, and the tears started falling down my eyes.
“Romero,” I called his name through my tears. “I’m going—”
“Tell me tonight,” he said and hung up the phone.
His revelation hit me in the bottom of my stomach because although it was sweet, I was still ending our relationship. I put my phone back in my purse and headed toward the gate with my head held high. Once I got to the gate, the guards were looking at me with a weird look on their faces.
“Ms. Dalton, is everything okay? Where is Emmanuel and Miguel?” one of the guards asked. I never knew any of their names.
“I told Romero that I would Uber to him because I wanted to be normal for today. No security or no driver,” I told them with a fake smile on my face.
Holding my phone up, I said, “Don’t worry. We just got off the phone,” which wasn’t a lie. They nodded their heads and opened the gate for me. Once I was out on the streets, I immediately started to feel normal. I walked up three blocks and caught an Uber, and I told him that I was going to the airport. Luckily for me, the airport was only thirty minutes away. The Uber dropped me off, and I walked into the busy ass airport.
“I’m definitely going to miss flying private,” I said to myself.
After getting checked in, I went through security with no problems. For some odd reason, I felt like I was being watched, and I hated that feeling. I kept looking around, and I didn’t see anyone that would know me, so I was in the clear.
“Calm down, Taiwan. You are doing the right thing,” I said to myself as I walked through the airport.
I threw the phone that I had just for him in the nearest trash can so he couldn’t track me, and I pulled my regular phone out my back pocket to check the time. Once I found my terminal, they were already boarding. I was so happy because that meant Romero wouldn’t be able to hunt me down. By the time he got home, I’d be in the sky.
After I scanned my ticket, I walked down the terminal to board the plane. I booked a first-class seat because it would be one last splurge on myself for a while. I breathed a sigh of relief once I was in my seat and in my seat belt. I started scrolling my social media to see all the mess that was going on back in Chicago. Suddenly, my mouth became watery as that familiar scent started to invade my nostrils. I looked up to see that he wasn’t in the line of people that were getting on a plane, so I looked back down at my phone. I was minding my business, until a piece of paper fell in my lap, and my heart stopped when I noticed my signature. Slowly, I looked up into a glare that I had never seen before.
“Going somewhere?” he asked me.
