But first, I needed to find out who truly was Sal.

  Epilogue

I heard the subway approaching. But even as I heard it, I was still questioning how I was interpreting it. Not like those around me. I wasn’t the same. I was different, and I felt as though it showed as obviously as if I were standing naked.

I sighed a heavy breath. It felt good to know that at the very least, I could breathe. With lungs, and oxygen, just like everybody else. But I also knew it wasn’t enough. I wondered if I would ever be enough.

The subway ground to a screeching halt, which caused me to jump in a way I didn’t understand. There was so much I still didn’t understand.

I boarded the train and located a seat near the back. I figured I could probably stand for longer than most everyone else in there, but I simply didn’t feel like it. I slumped down and closed my eyes. Trying to make sense of it all, trying to remember what on earth I was on this mission to prove.

What was my purpose. Who was I, really?

I was interrupted by the sound of strain in a woman’s voice. I quickly looked up and saw a heavily pregnant lady, beautiful even so, struggling to hold onto the rail with one hand, while subconsciously protecting the precious life inside her with the other. The rail car abruptly started moving, and the woman lost her balance. I instinctively lunged forward, and caught her before she could hit the ground.

“Are you alright?” I asked, as I steadied her back on her feet.

She smiled at me, “Yes, thank you so much.”

I smiled back, then prompted her to take my now-empty seat. “Please, sit down.”

I could tell she wanted to say no; the pride in her wanted to show her strength and not have to rely on others, as if doing so somehow implied weakness. It was something I (or perhaps John?) had never understood, but then she surprised me. She smiled in relief and accepted my offer. I helped her to the seat, and provided steady support for her while she sat, so as not to stumble on the moving train.

I wondered why she was here. Why she was alone, on the subway, so late in a pregnancy. Where was the father? I thought. I hoped there even was one still in the picture. And that maybe he was simply working hard somewhere, right now, so that they could afford to not have to take the subway anymore. Again, I was lost in my own thoughts when she decided to speak.

“You don’t often meet people like you here,” she said.

I turned to her and furrowed my brow, slightly confused. “Really?” I asked. “How so?”

“Well, maybe things are different where you are from, but here, people aren’t so eager to help out.” She turned and looked at me with a smile. “You’re one of a kind.”

I couldn’t help but feel good. A smile snuck its way onto my cheeks, and I suddenly felt, what’s the word…accepted.

“I’m Lisa,” the woman said, taking her hand off her belly and extending it to me, “What’s yours?”

I hesitated a moment, then reached out my own.

  “I am Sal.”
