Sam also told them that the Mickey Malone office was closed and he was opening a new one in Capo Beach. He said Mickey had gone to live in the east.

  “Langley, eh?” proposed Sparky.

Sam didn’t comment. Let the myth slowly die.

“Don’t be a stranger, Sam,” said Sparky.

“I won’t. I still have some of Mickey’s clients in this area. And, of course, the courts are up here. I’ll be testifying from time to time.”

When they got to the beach house, there were hugs all around from the Crowns and Becky. Helena began describing her plans for a giant wedding.

Sam interrupted. “Mom! The wedding plans are the prerogative of the bride’s parents.”

Bo said, “They’re already going crazy! I think everyone is going way overboard! Sam and I haven’t even discussed a date yet.”

“But this is something I’ve been looking forward to my entire life! My only son finally getting married!” wailed Helena. “And I want to show you off, Bo, to all my friends!”

Sam said, “She’s not a new brand of rose to show to your garden club, Mom. I understand that you want to put us on display, but I don’t want you throwing your money at this situation and overwhelming Bo’s parents. They will work with Bo on the wedding. You can plan a post-wedding reception of some sort—go wild! I don’t care.”

“That’s a possible solution, Samuel,” Helena agreed.

  “Good.”

John Crown lit his pipe and smiled.

Bo’s plans were to get her P.I. license—which, because she had several years in the FBI as an investigator, would be a formality. She also told Sam she wanted to study for the California Bar exam and get her license to practice law. She thought that would make her more valuable to Crown Investigations. Plus, she could handle the legal work for Becky’s new venture.

Sam thought that was great. He shuffled through his business card file and found Paul Franco’s card—the one Franco had given him at The Fisherman’s restaurant when Sally and her mother had come to their table to thank Sam for saving their lives so many years ago.

He called Franco and explained Bo’s plans. Franco was eager to help and agreed to let her work part-time in his office as a paralegal and he would guide her through what she needed to know to pass the exam. That would speed things up for Bo. She was very excited!

Late on Friday the 10th of August, Bo and Sam were in the spa alone. Everyone else had gone to bed. They were discussing the problem their parents were having coordinating the wedding and reception dates.

Sam laughed. “They may never sort this out. We may not get married until next June!”

Bo said, “I will not wait that long! You’ll get away from me somehow!”

“That’s not a problem. What I’m really most interested in is getting you established as Becky’s mother—officially. I think you both need that. So what I propose is we go to Vegas and get married this weekend. We can file adoption papers on Monday. Then we’ll do the ‘trappings of marriage’ thing to please our parents whenever they get it worked out.”

Bo looked at Sam with wide eyes, wondering how he had read her mind. Then she kissed him and said, “What a marvelous idea!”
