The Secret of Poppyridge Cove Page 17

by Rimmy London

“We have to keep walking,” he whispered, slightly out of breath. He took a step back toward the house, pulling her with him and kissing her again, taking another step.

She stumbled over her feet, laughing as she walked. “Okay, but really I don’t mind overbaked.”

“Ah, never.” He shook his head, “It will be perfection. Just like this.” He stopped, standing in place, and held her face gently in his hands. His eyes were soft, looking over her with an expression that was honest and easy to read. It told her a hundred different things, although they were all the same.

  He loved her.

Above everything else, she knew this completely. Her hands settled over his, and she was lost in one final kiss. It sunk deep into her heart, dangerously close to her soul. The kind of kiss that had her letting go of everything she held so tightly, the things that kept her safe from the world. They drifted away without a thought.

When they walked back into the house, it was filled with a sweet, rich fragrance. Chase gave her a look that barely contained the excitement bubbling inside him and rushed off to the kitchen, forbidding her to follow.

Half the fun was allowing him to surprise her, and she planned on letting him.

Giggles and sounds of movement came from upstairs, and the fireplace held only a crumble of embers glowing with deep orange heat. Abby sat on the hearth, feeling it warm her back as the sunset mimicked its color from outside. She fingered the delicate stone on her left hand. A warmth flowed through her, coming from some internal source. It left her with fleeting thoughts of Chase, and every glance he’d ever given her. The love that had been there all along.

  And finally, she was home.
