Bear Grylls was brought up on the Isle of Wight, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. A martial arts expert, Bear went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces (21 SAS). He then had a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, breaking his back in three places. Despite this, and after months of military rehabilitation, he went on to become one of the youngest ever climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Bear is the host of Discovery Channel’s Emmy-nominated TV series Man Vs Wild (also known as Born Survivor) which is one of the most watched shows on the planet, reaching an estimated 1.2 billion viewers. Bear continues to lead record-breaking expeditions, from Antarctica to the Arctic, which in turn have raised over $2.5 million for children around the world.
Bear was appointed as the youngest ever Chief Scout on record, as figurehead to 28 million Scouts worldwide. He was made a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy, and is a bestselling author. He now lives with his wife, Shara, and their three sons, Jesse, Marmaduke and Huckleberry, on a Dutch barge in London and on a small remote Welsh island.
