Dorothy’s eyes widened. “He’s not gone AWOL has he?”
“Yup.”
“Can we help?” Ben asked.
“I’m going to go and check his lab. If you see him in the meantime, would you please call me?” I gave her a business card from my purse.
“Of course,” said Dorothy. She smiled at me. “He’ll be here though. You mean too much to him to mess this up.”

I grabbed a Mag-Car and directed the driver to the CyGes office, checking my phone every few minutes. Half the wedding party was on the lookout for Scott. I was confident if he returned to the hotel I’d know about it within minutes. So far though, my phone remained stubbornly silent.
Dorothy’s words rang in my head, and went some way to soothing the knot of emotion in my stomach. I meant too much for him to mess this up. That was sweet of her. If he was late, I didn’t think it’d be intentional. Or at least, I hoped so.
Even though the CyGes offices were locked, since I worked there, my access card let me right in. I walked down the empty corridor, my shoes clicking on the tiled floor, and headed for the laboratory wing. Sitting behind a huge desk was the regular security guard, and I kicked myself for not leaving a message. He smiled when he saw me.
“Hi Edgar. Is Scott here somewhere?”
“Sure is, ma’am. I was going to give him half an hour and then call him to check he knew the time.”
Everyone knew it was our wedding day, with the possible exception of the groom. “Thank you, Edgar.” I walked on, pushed through a set of swing doors, and then finally came to Scott’s main lab. He was here, that much I knew, but would he be annoyed at being disturbed? Would this be the pattern of our life together?
I’d asked myself this a dozen times before, and always drawn the same answer. Even if it was, it’d be worth it. He was worth it.
I pressed my palm against the door panel and it slid open. Stepping inside, I scanned the interior, looking for my lover. Not hunched over his usual desk. Not working on the main computer screens. His phone lay abandoned on a side table, along with a row of empty coffee cups, and his notebook. He’d been here a while, judging by the number of coffees he’d gone through.
As I wondered where he might have gone now, the bathroom door opened, and there he was. My heart lurched at the sight of his familiar face, so dear to me.
“Beth.” His brilliant blue eyes lit up when he saw me. “Is everything okay?”
“Well, apart from the fact we’re getting married in two hours, and you’re still in your lab…”
Concern wrinkled his brow, and he ran a hand through his corn-yellow hair. “That’s ages away. We’re going to be away on honeymoon for a week and I just wanted to finalise some tests first.”
“Uh huh.” I walked up to him and slipped my arms around his waist. “There’s one very important test you still need to run.”
“There is?”
“The kiss test. Our last chance to kiss as an engaged couple, and to see how different it’ll be when we’re married.”
“Hmm. We might need to go over that one a few times.” Delight danced in his eyes, and he cupped my cheeks with his hands. “Ready for the first iteration?”
He brushed his lips across mine, soft, warm and intoxicating. I was never ready for the potency of Scott’s kiss. Even this light pass was enough to make me weak at the knees.
“Again?” He whispered and I nodded. This time was deeper, with Scott very much in charge. He angled my head to the perfect position and flicked at my teeth with his tongue. When I opened my mouth to let him in, he hummed approval and I felt the vibration against my lips. Without conscious thought I’d lifted my hands and curled them into the soft fabric of his shirt, clinging as though I never meant to let go.
“Beth,” he murmured, and shifted the angle again. “Do you have any idea what you do to me?”
I kissed him back, hard and hungry. “The same as what you do to me.” We stood close, my breasts pressing on his chest, our thighs together. If we had more time, I’d be tempted to ask him to switch off the security feed and give us some privacy, but I knew we couldn’t. Not today at least.
We stood there a few minutes longer, lost in each other, and then Scott pulled back. “Why didn’t you call me?”
“I did. Five times.”
“I’m surprised you didn’t send out a search party.”
“I did. Half the guests are busy looking for you.”
“The most important person is here though.” He rested his forehead on mine. “Come on. We have somewhere to be, and I don’t want to be late.”
I tugged his head down, and closed the distance to his lips. Me neither.
