HE PUT HER down and she rushed to the bathroom. As she wretched into the toilet, he rubbed her back calmly and patiently, then gave her a damp washcloth when she was done.

“I’m sorry you had to see that,” she said after it was over.

“Don’t ever be sorry for anything you do. You’re carrying my baby. Our child. We do this thing together.”

  “You… We do?”

“I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

“So you’re…okay with this?” She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. She looked like death warmed over.

“Other than the fact that the most beautiful woman in the world loves me, it’s the most amazing news I’ve ever heard.”

“I thought you never wanted to be a father. That your parents got married and stayed together only because their mating produced children.”

“I was jaded, hard-hearted, but you opened my eyes that there is so much more to this crazy world when you have someone by your side who loves you. The difference between my parents and us is that they had no love for each other. They were forced into a marriage that neither of them wanted.” He kissed her cheeks, her hair, her hands. “I’m ecstatic, Roxy. The only other thing that makes me happier than knowing I’m going to be the father of your child—that something of me is growing in you—” he choked and brushed away a tear “—is that you love me.”

She let him lift her gently up onto the counter and she wrapped her arms around his neck. He smelled like peanut butter, sweat and the sweet scent of sex. And she loved him more than she ever thought possible.

“When is the baby due?” he asked, nuzzling her neck. His hand slid up her shirt and fondled her breast.”

“Dr. DeGraff says that I’m about eight weeks along.”

“Eight weeks?” He pulled back, his eyes wide. “That means…”

She smiled and cupped his face in her hands. She couldn’t wait to tell him the rest of the news. “Yes, that means the first time we made love I got pregnant.”

He threw his head back and laughed. “Well, that doesn’t surprise me.”

  “It doesn’t?”

“Maybe my father was partially right. He told me that the men in our family are very virile and because of that, it’s our duty to spread our seed.”

She grabbed his face, pulling him close so that their noses touched. “I will have none of that. Your seed stays with me,” she said playfully.

“You know what that means, don’t you?” He brushed her nipple with his thumb, sending shivers of delight down her arms.

  “What?”

“If you got pregnant so quickly, then this probably won’t be our only child. That is, if you want more.”

She laughed, happier than she ever imagined was possible. “I already know that.”

He pulled away from her, held her at arm’s length, his dark eyes glistening. “And just how do you know that?”

  “Because I’m… We’re having twins.”
