“So name the first one after me,” Amy said. “Only if she’s a girl of course.”

  “You’ve got it.”

“Did I thank you for asking me to be your maid of honor?” Amy said.

“As if I’d ask anyone else.”

“I think Tawanna would have liked the job,” Amy noted with a grin.

“Tawanna would never wear a pastel color for a bridesmaid’s dress. No, she’s much happier being in the audience. She told me she’d be easy to spot, that she’d be sitting right on the aisle. And I hear Lisa is bringing that new boyfriend of hers. He’s some kind of Web site creator with a very promising future.”

“I think this should be a very interesting wedding. On the bride’s side, an array of preschoolers along with their parents. And on the groom’s side, a platoon of United States Marines, all in their dress blues. I think I’m going to cry when you walk under that canopy of sabers. A full-dress marine wedding. I think even your mom will be impressed.”

“I’m just glad she got back from her cruise in time.”

“Speaking of time…” Amy tapped her delicate gold watch meaningfully. “Are you ready?”

  Jessica grinned. “Affirmative.”

The minute Jessica began her walk down the aisle, she didn’t notice anything but Curt, waiting for her near the altar. Hearing laughter, she saw that Blue, who was adorably dressed as a flower girl, had paused to lean down and pick up Fooba bear who was wearing a bridal veil. The little girl then continued on her way, tossing flower petals with a throw that would no doubt make Curt proud, and think she should try out for the major leagues.

Then her attention returned to Curt, who looked even more dashing than usual in full-dress blues. She felt the warmth of his fingers through the white gloves he wore, felt the conviction of his gaze as he looked at her and let her see how much he loved her.

The ceremony was a blur to her, but she’d never forget that look in his eyes. Or what happened once the minister declared them husband and wife. The church erupted with a series of ooohrahs! from the marines, quickly followed by the mayhem of squealing preschoolers.

And as Jessica and Curt kissed as husband and wife for the first time, the sound of “You Can’t Hurry Love” sung by ex-Genesis member Phil Collins filled the church.
