  They saw him.

Their rifles came up to their eyes as they started running, and Myers could actually see one of their faces — features that were hard and weathered, like Merrick’s.

He waited for the trigger pull, closing his eyes.

Instead, he heard a high-pitched whine and opened his eyes just in time to see the two men blasted backwards, their bodies ripped to pieces. Another Tracer, this one painted a deep reddish color with bright yellow stripes decorating it, flew over them and targeted the first Tracer that had entered the city.

Myers looked up at it and watched it fire another rocket. He waited for the explosion. A few seconds later he heard it, far away somewhere else in the city. There was no way to tell if it had hit its target or the rocket had landed on another building.

The Tracer descended, its bulk fitting perfectly above the road between the two rows of identical buildings.

Rand rushed toward it and Myers followed close behind. The side door opened, a plank emerging as a ramp. Myers looked through the swirling smoke of the explosions and tried to see who was standing in the doorway.

He recognized the person, but the features weren’t there yet. Like a dream. Or one of his memories. It was her. Older, but it was her.

  Diane.

He ran even faster, but Rand beat him there.

“Diane!” Rand called out. He jumped onto the short walkway that led into the Tracer and embraced her. She kissed him, and they held each other for a moment.

Myers stopped, stunned. He wasn’t sure what to make of it. It was really her, he was sure. And yet…

She looked at him. Tears glistened in her eyes, and a hint of a smile appeared on her mouth. She reached out a hand.

“Myers, come on,” she said. He knew she was yelling, fighting to be heard over the people running in all directions, gunfire, and the smoldering wreckage of the fallen buildings, but it sounded to Myers like she was whispering directly into his ear.

Rand turned and offered a hand as well, and together they pulled Myers into the Tracer.

“Let’s go,” she said to someone up in the cockpit of the flying machine. She turned and looked at Rand and Myers.

  “They’re coming.”

  Do me a favor...

If you liked this book (or even if you hated it…) write a review or rate it. You might not think it makes a difference, but it does.

Besides actual currency (money), the currency of today’s writing world is reviews. Reviews, good or bad, tell other people that an author is worth reading.

As an “indie” author, I need all the help I can get. I’m hoping that since you made it this far into my book, you have some sort of opinion on it.

Would you mind sharing that opinion? It only takes a second.

  Thanks,

  Nick Thacker
