  "I hope you can forgive me,” Jess said. “ For ever thinking you were in on it. I haven’t been thinking very clearly. I finally realized that last night. I had to start thinking for myself, which ironically meant trying to think more like her. Like Ally."

  “I hope that won’t become a habit,” Sykes joked, coming up behind her.

  Jess turned and looked into his eyes. “Was that a joke? Detective? You actually do have a sense of humor?”

  He smiled and shrugged. “Have dinner with me and find out.”
