THE SILENT STRIKER Page 17

by Pete Kalu

Does how wealthy you are affect your choice of friends?

  Does wealth create social division?

Read again Mr Vialli’s comments about the certainty of Bowker Vale’s victory in the article on page 181. Can wealth affect success on the pitch? Can it affect success in other sports? If yes, how?

  4

  Characters

  1. What is a minor character?

  2. Which minor character is your favourite minor character in Silent Striker? Which character do you most identify with?

  3. Do you think the real name of the character who everyone calls Horse is actually Horse? How do nicknames arise?

  4. Are nicknames good or bad?

  5. One reader of Silent Striker said their favourite character in Silent Striker was the dog. Can dogs or other animals be favourite characters?

  6. What unique things do animals add to a story?

  7. The dog in Silent Striker is treated badly by its owner. Can you imagine why?

  Creative Writing Prompts

  1. Many sports are played outdoors in all weathers. Write a short description of a goal, scored or a triumph, on a hot, sunny day.

  2. Now change the weather in the scene.

  3. Which kind of weather in the scene did you enjoy writing most? Why?

  4. Describe an outdoor sports pitch in the middle of the night (see the Striker book, Zombie XI for inspiration!)

What creatures might be out on that pitch at night?

What is the weather like? How can you make the scene extra-spooky?

  5. Write a letter from Adele to Marcus apologising for what her father said to the referee.

  6. Write a diary entry from the point of view of a dog, complaining about its owner.

  7. Write a scene using mainly what is heard.

  8. Write a scene using primarily what is seen.

  9. Marcus’s mum is a magician. Imagine being a magician’s assistant. Tell the story of a magic trick (such as the ‘sawn-in-half trick) from the point of view of the magician’s assistant.

Write a persuasive, formal letter from Marcus to his Head of Year to convince him why he shouldn’t be suspended from the school football team.

Write a newspaper article to report on Dulcie’s win against Bowker Vale.
