The Carnage Trilogy (Book 3): Aftermath [Who Will Be Left?] Page 13

by Birch, Matthew

Standing up, I speak softly, “I'm sorry...” Walking away, I see Jonathon dash back in, panicking as he tells me he has vital news!

For some reason, I feel in a trance, almost like I can't believe the truth myself. “I know Jonathon, Ed Jones, the unbending, unyielding, unforgiving man, has become the very monsters he swore to destroy...” Looking the man behind the mirror dead in the eye, I say, “And with good reason too... Let me tell you the true tale of the Carnage, and why Ed Jones, is doing the right thing...”

“But Chloe, he-” No, he must understand. So, my final words to him are as simple as they need to be.

“But most of all... Why the Organisation must fall”

“No, we’re not letting it end there...” Grim, a voice speaks innocently behind me, a voice I have only ever heard utter few words in my time of knowing him. Standing tall, his frame skinny, his ruffled hair a bloody mess, and the scars on his face and the slight impairment on his hips that force his body to be constantly leaned to the left, his body barely supporting him...

With his tattered jeans, his torn shirt, and his missing shoes...

He is almost naked, his maddened eyes staring me down intensely...

Jonathon steps aside, raising his hands, looking between Steven and me...

“Apparently Maya made Ed promise to keep me alive... The only way he could do this was infecting me...” Steven grumbles, glaring at Jonathon. “I got on board the same helicopter that landed a few days back. Ed slaughtered them all because they went there to cleanse the rest of the island and retake it after his broadcast that said the Carnage was dead...”

I try to speak, but he cuts me off-

“He killed them all because they were Organisation controlled soldiers... They want back what is theirs. He won’t let them. He has a promise to keep...” Steven’s murky face bares his blackened, human flesh riddled teeth...

“You can... speak?” I mutter, edging away. I really don’t know his intentions-

“Ed fixed me... Bless his heart... Saved my life when I was almost dead! Doesn’t matter, he asked me to do one thing and one thing alone...” Steven now finally turns to Jonathon who reaches into his jacket. “Please don’t pull a gun on me; I’ve already pacified enough of you Agents”

Jonathon let’s go of his hold on his weapon, and then continues to say, “Knocking us out is still assault!”

“Well, at least you’re not dead” Steven crosses his arms, his body cleaning him up, making him look normal again. Jutting back into place, he is finally upright and normal. “Anyway, Ed told me to assist humans in any way, shape or form I could. So, here I am, but of course, other than that was to find you...”

“Why?” I ask, stepping on Ed’s mother’s toe. She gasps in pain, and I send her an irritated look for not moving when she could have!

Steven steps forth, “He asked me to tell you that... You better raise those girls well and he wishes you the best...” Steven stops, nodding to himself with a bright smile. “Yeah, that is it, I’ll be off now” Turning on his heel, he goes to make his exit-

“No, I can’t let you do that!” Jonathon withdraws his weapon-

“Please, I don’t intend to do any harm. I just want to enjoy my freedom” Changing his form, Steven looks like a completely different man?! Blond hair, muscular body, what the-

Steven leaves the room, pushing past several hardly awake soldiers who enter the room, spreading out to let Steven pass. Well, this had most certainly been a weird evening...

“So, now what?” Jonathon looks at me now for the answers.

“Let him go I suppose. All that matters is that me and my girls are okay, and that the Organisation doesn’t get their hands on that technology”

Ed Jones, you are most certainly a survivor, doing anything you can in the name of the people you love, for as long as you have your compassion and not a shred of rage, you shall persevere, surviving the rest of the world’s hidden agendas and intentions. Even now, thank you, for choosing to be human at heart, even if you retain the form of the beast.

Know that I am thankful for everything that you did...

I, among so few, survived hell.

  The end

Thank you, for staying with this book series till the very end. It was my first ever trilogy, and I have worked on these books ever since 2014. It’s been one long way to, but in the end, it was worth it, as every day has been a treat to enjoy doing the hobby and passion I enjoy most – writing. Story telling makes me happy, and I love that I can share my imagination with others. I hope you enjoyed!

Thanks for all your support, don’t forget to leave an honest review if you fancy it!

  Every little helps!
