Flannery smiled at that. “Fair enough. So what do you think? About transformation training?”

“I think you’ll be fine,” Thea said. “Just take your time. I wonder how Aunt Bridget will take it, though. Both of us being purple dragons.”

“I’d really love to get her moved to the colony, actually,” Flannery said. “Into Nana’s old cottage, or something. I hate leaving her out there on the farm by herself.”

“Nana’s cottage? You’d have balls, asking Alecto for that.”

  “I already did.”

  “You’re kidding me!”

  “Nope.”

“Did she laugh you out of her office, or scream you out?”

“Both.” Flannery shrugged. “I don’t blame her. I know how much she misses Nana. But it’s just sitting there empty. Anyway, it’s hard to tell who’s more resistant to the idea, Alecto or my mother.”

Thea laughed. “You’ve got your work cut out for you on that project.”

“Well, if you can introduce a whole new product line and completely change the direction of our service offerings, I figure I can take on getting one old lady to move.”

“I’m starving,” Thea said. “What do you say we get some lunch, and I tell you every single thing I remember about the transformation? Spoiler alert: yes, it does hurt.”

  “A lot?”

Thea waved her hand. “Nothing you can’t handle. You start being able to take pain better, as your blood changes.”

Flannery stood up. “Okay, but give me one other spoiler before we go.”

  “Ask away.”

Flannery’s expression got vulnerable, reminding Thea of her as a girl. “Was it worth it?” she asked quietly.

Thea smiled at her cousin, and put a hand on her shoulder. “What, you mean going through a painful, irreversible physical transformation, hardening my heart, struggling with the monster within, and doing terrible, sometimes cruel things I’d never have thought myself capable of?”

  “Yeah, that.”

Thea’s smile widened to a grin.

  “Yep. Totally worth it.”
