by Alex Nast

  "Not Free City?"

Oliver laughs, "no." He looks at me, intent, "it's called Juneau. At least it used to be called that."

"Don't mess with me," I say, pulling at his sleeve to bring him to a stop, "what's it really called?"

"Really Juno," Oliver says, "it's called Juneau. When you told us your name... well I figured you knew. But then it was obvious you didn't, and we weren't sure we could trust you yet, so we didn't want to spoil the surprise. Anyway, it's probably just a coincidence or something."

"Ya. Probably." Did I hear that right? They didn't trust me yet, meaning they trust me now? And then it's like it all clicks in to place. They trust me. I trust them. Of course. We're going to do this together, and I can't let them down.

Oliver and Maz keep walking, and Felix limps past me a moment later, and I take one last, long look at New Seattle. The gears are turning in my head. Why was I named Juno? Did my Mom know something? Where the hell is she now? Did she really go to the Towers that night, so long ago? She said that's where she was going, but how would I know? Maybe she knew something more. But probably she's long gone. Probably.

"Goodbye," I say quietly. Then I turn around and vow never to set eyes on New Seattle again. Body Hunters, Dorian, the Towers... I'm done with all of them. I won't ever come back here. My place is with Oliver and Maz and Felix.

All I can see in front of me is dusty ground and wasted trees. Grey mountains far in the distance. Is there still an ocean out there? Green things still growing? Does Juneau exist?

I touch the hilt of my knife on my belt, still there. Then I start hurrying to catch up.

  About Alex Nast

I like to write about action and adventure and fill my life with it too. Hiking, camping, rock climbing and skiing all help me get the thrills in when the weather is right, and when it isn't I sit down and let my imagination fly. I haven't filled my life with any dystopian or post-apocalyptic scenarios yet, and hopefully won't any time soon :)
