One thing that annoyed Gareth Neame, our producer, about the scene was that, for some reason, they had chosen to send Mary outside without a coat, even though we had snowflakes swirling all around her. So in a scene in the fourth series we have her remembering the proposal and saying: ‘I was standing outside in the snow and I didn’t have a coat, but I wasn’t cold, because all I kept thinking was: he’s going to propose,’ which solves it for me. Anyway, the point is, we got there, and to mark the moment we thought we’d have the snow and the moon and the stars and the music and everything. And Matthew going down on his knees. I copied this from someone I knew who told her fiancé: ‘No, you must do it properly, you must get down on your knees.’ I agree with her. Men who try to get out of it by muttering, ‘You know what I’m going to say,’ just aren’t playing cricket.
THE END
PICTURE SECTION
MATTHEW: I want every wounded man taken down the line before it starts to get dark. We’ve bloody well lost enough of them for one day.
MARY: Goodbye, then. And such good luck.
SYBIL: But do you think it’s ready?
MRS PATMORE: I know it’s ready.
DAISY: Go on. You don’t want to spoil it.
VERA: If you don’t come back to me, I’m going to the newspapers with a cracking story. And I’d like to bet the Granthams won’t survive it.
BRANSON: I’ve told myself and told myself you’re too far above me, but things are changing.
EDITH: Don’t look so bewildered. It’s simple. I will drive the tractor.
SYBIL: It’s more savage and more cruel than I could have imagined… But I feel useful for the first time in my life.
CARLISLE: I know Miss Swire. Her uncle and I are old friends.
LAVINIA: Well, old acquaintances, anyway.
GENERAL SIR HERBERT STRUTT: This is all very impressive, Lady Grantham. The nurses and your own staff are to be congratulated.
DAISY: I am glad you’re all right. Honest.
WILLIAM: You should be. It’s the thought of you that keeps me going.
MARY: He says you may have damaged your spine.
MATTHEW: How long will it take to repair?
DOCTOR: There’s an ambulance waiting, although no one quite knows how you managed it.
VIOLET: What exactly is the matter with him?
DOCTOR: His body’s sustained too much damage. He cannot recover.
ROBERT: The ceasefire will begin at eleven o’clock on the morning of the eleventh of November.
ETHEL: They have to see him. They must see Charlie.
MATTHEW: I want to tell you all something. As you know, during this – well, I think I can say horrible – time, Lavinia has proved to be the most marvellous person…
VIOLET: What on earth is it?
LAVINIA: A gramophone.
VIOLET: I should stand well clear when you light the blue touch paper.
BATES: I, John Bates, take thee, Anna May Smith, to be my wedded wife.
MARY: I see what was worrying you. If Lavinia had been carried off, you wanted to be here to stop Matthew from falling into my arms on a tidal wave of grief.
MATTHEW: I know it’s a cliche, but I believe she died of a broken heart because of that kiss… And we were the ones who killed her.
O’BRIEN: Is anyone there? Is anyone there?
The girls start to laugh.
THOMAS: You must take it seriously, otherwise they’ll be offended.
JUDGE: John Bates, you have been found guilty of the charge of wilful murder. You will be taken from here to a place of execution where you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. And may God have mercy upon your soul.
THOMAS: What about the black bottom, m’lady?
VIOLET: Just keep me upright and we’ll try to avoid it.
MARY: We’ve been on the edge of this so many times, Matthew. Please don’t take me there again, unless you’re sure.
MATTHEW: I am sure.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
My gratitude to Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge remains as fervent as ever. Essentially, we three make the series, and we have spent the last four years in each other’s company, inhabiting the extraordinary place that Downton Abbey has become. We work together to shape the scripts and the episodes and, heaven knows, we have been rewarded. I am also deeply in Ion Trewin’s debt for his Herculean labours in yet again turning the screenplays and my commentary into a book; and, if anything even more than last year, I salute Doctor Alasdair Emslie, whose medical knowledge was constantly employed in finding the wounds and ailments that brought our characters home from the front. Thanks, too, to Andrew Roberts, the military historian, for suggesting several stories, great and small, based on real events from the First World War, and Fiona Shackleton for her expert advice on 1920s divorce. Cathy King and Jeremy Barber are still my terrific agents, and I am happy to say that my wife, Emma, and my son, Peregrine, have lost none of their enthusiasm for rescuing me from glaring plot errors that might otherwise have engulfed us. I am very, very grateful to them all.
